rev limiter

Well when I was coming home from work, i wanted to try shifting the auto manually, so i put it in first. when i floored, i forgot to shift it into second. i know i'm stupid, i was pretty damn tired. i stalled for four seconds before shifting into second. my question is if i damaged the engine by my stupidity? thanks for the help.

Did you hit the Rev Limit where the car just kind felt like it was sputtering ?? Well from what I have read about these cars (2002) w/ the 4L60E is they have a Rev Limiter built into the transmission and the computer will kick it in to keep from damaging the engine.. I did this on my car when I testdrove it with the salesman in the car and at first I thought I messed the car up but it did not.. I hit 60 mph in 1 st gear when it kicked in about 6,000 rpms and when I actually shifted it, nothing was wrong..

I would not worry about it unless there is an odd noise...

rev limiter

I don't think you damaged you engine at all, because that is what the Rev limiter is for. I would say if you didn't pin it there for a long time you are fine, and no damage is done

Yep, that's what the rev-limiter is there for.

I seriously doubt you hurt anything.

60 in first gear at 6000 rpms??? I don't know about that one.... I think you'd have to be around 9000 rpms to be goin 60 in 1st.

The transmission does not have a rev limiter..cmon now.. and to do 60 mph in an A4 ls1 with the factory 6200 limit you would need a 2.50 gear ratio to hit 60mph at 6000.. with a 2.73 you would be at 6600rpm at 60mph, and with a 3.23 you would be a 7800rpm at 60mph..

Your rev limiter is 6200 thru the computer.. its possible you could have hurt something.. maybe floated a valve and hit a piston with a valve and bent some pushrods..

you wont know now unless you check..

dont take this the wrong way.. your a dumbass dont forget to shift

Sometimes it's annoying when the trans is constantly shifting up and down - especially in heavy traffic - so sometimes I'll hold my car in 1st..........I realize that there's no "speed" advantage, but sometimes it's also nice hearing the motor rev up a little more than normal.

Also, unless you held the car on the rev limiter for a long time, it's not going to hurt the engine...............don't do it all the time, but don't worry that after the first time you've hurt the engine - unless you hear something definitely f'd up.

BTW: it is possible to hit speeds close to 60 mph. My car can easily hit 90 km/h, which is 55 mph in 1st, and if you hold right until the limiter, it'll do ~95 km/h, or about ~58 mph. Again, not something to make a habit of though.

Actually An Auto Tranny does have a Rev Limiter Called A Governor.. Autos have a Governor in them to keep the main shaft from spinning too fast.. If you don't believe me go and ask a Transmission Mechanic and they will tell you that TH350, TH400, TH700R4 (4L60), TH2004R, 4L60E and 4L80E, even the Allison 5 Speed Autos have a Governor... If the governor is not working properly, it can cause your trans to spin too fast and have it blow up.. I read somewhere that 2002 Fbodys w/ A4, will likely not hurt the engine because of the Revlimiter and Governor in The Trans.. Basically a Governor is a Rev Limiter, so before you say anything like that, please do a little more reading on GM's Turbo Hydramatic Transmissions Please... Plus a shop that I used to work for barely started getting into rebuilding auto trans and they rebuilt a 700r4 out of an 88 blazer, forgot to readjust the Governor and blew the tranny again...
