Question Remote Switch for Electric Cutout

I am looking into putting a cutout with a Qtec (http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/qtec.htm) or McCord electric valve (http://www.mccordcg.com/mpp/mpp.htm). However, I do not look forward to having to run the wires, nor having new switch in a crowded cockpit. For those of you who have an electronics background, has anyone designed a RF remote to open/close these valves?
Thanks,
Tony

Tony,

These motors were designed to be hard wired, and to control them with RF would be like re-inventing the wheel. It could be done, but would take a lot of Engineering/R&D/etc. Basically an engineering nightmare.

I personally reccomend the McCord motor, it's basically the same thing only cheaper. I jumped the gun and bought the QTP package and then had to throw the crappy Flow Tech cutout away because it was never designed to work with the electric motor/flange, the bolts are way too short and never meant for this application, as well as being shoddy material and welding. Better to have your cutout custom made at a good muffler shop out of stainless steel.

All you have to do is pull the bottom of the rear seat, come through the rubber drain plug on the passenger side right under the seat, then run the wires under the carpeting and into the console. I removed my console and tied the electric switch into the cigar lighter for my 12vdc power source. One small 1/4 inch hole in the ashtray or in my case, in the console just above the accessory plug, and you have a sanitary installation that isn't going to look like you hacked anything up. If you were looking to keep from drilling any visable holes, you could probably put the switch under the seat, but it sure is convenient to have it on the console where you can get to it easy. If you want pics of my installation, email me and I will send a couple to you so you can see how clean it looks. Not the answer you were looking for, but. . . . .

Hope this helps. . .

My buddy and I installed my DMH performance E-cutout last Sunday for an upcoming 4th Gen tech article for World Wide Camaro. I can tell you it is a little more involved running the wires if you want a clean look. This involves removing the passenger seat, the center counsel and running the wires under the carpet.

The tech article should be in the Dec 02 issue of Camaro World Magazine out in a month.

We mounted the switch in the ash tray if you look at the following link you will see where in the ash tray we mounted the switch

Enjoy

Why would you through the Flowtech away??? Works fine with my QTEC. Bolts work just fine. Did you read the directions??? You dont use the gasket. All electric cutouts are 1/2" thick so then you would have a problem with all brands. And Flowtech is the only manufacturer of cutouts in the first place. Any beef you have is with Flowtech a division of Holley. You will thank yourself that you didnt get the mccord. Just real up on all the failures.

But back to the topic at hand. Its not worth to try to make a remote version. Hide the switch in the ashtray if you dont want to see it.

Friend of Barry's are we? Well, you east coast boys have the right to your opinion. I was giving Tony mine. Some people probably thought the Yugo worked fine. I know that QTP doesn't manufacture that POS, but having it shipped with their high quality motor/flange package reflects on them just the same IMHO. I would forgo buying a ready made cutout altogether as I suggested to Tony, and have one made up with high quality materials that you can put the right length bolts on with a REAL gasket. Hopefully even have a wye welded without an inch of metal hanging off the inside blocking the flow of exhaust.

There is no sense in arguing this point any further, and I will not. You have expressed your opinion and Tony will have to take the info from both you and me for what it's worth. I know for sure that I'm not alone in my low opinion of that cutout, and I certainly wouldn't reccomend it OR a Yugo to anyone. My standards are higher than that.

Good luck. . .

Thanks for the opinions. Over the winter I'll be getting one and setting it up. As to a remote switch, I will probably design one. (In a previous life I have worked with electronics and almost anything that has a switch can be operated remotely with a relay or two.) Let you know if it works next year.

Again thanks for your opinions.
