recall on 2001 catalytic convertors
Just giving everybody a heads up, I'm going to be posting this in the computer section too since many people will be trying to read the codes for a cat failure.
I have 70k on my car and have had both catalytic convertors replaced, one at 40k and the other at 50k. There was some rumor that there was a bad batch of cats that were installed in 01 cars but no confirmation of it. Just received a notice from chevrolet today admitting that there were pre-mature failures in the right and left cats.
Mine were both replaced under warranty (every car has that 8 year 8ok warranty, government mandated I think) but some people might be over that amount of mileage and have an issue.
Chevy has extended the warranty to 10 years since placed in service or 120k miles.
Also, if you have had to pay for the work to be done (and at $400 a pop it's not cheap) they are offering refunds. I got this notice because I brought it into the dealer for the cat replacement, so my name was on the list. However, I know there are several people here who have bought their car second or third hand and have never brought it to the dealership so this is for you guys.

Can you post a copy of the letter/does it only apply to the '01 cars? Lots of people have had cats replaced free under the federal emissions warranty for P0420 or P0430 codes. Seen posts where California guys were told only 7rs/70K vs the 8yr/80K for some reason too? Someone posted something similar about getting a letter from GM on his '02 on another board a few hours ago but deleted the post for some reason. Can't remember if he said his were already replaced or not. Bought mine new and they have my address but haven't received a letter yet...

Yeah, if it throws P0420 or P0430 leave it on and make an appointment. Finally got my letter, but not the same one Capt Pete posted - only mentioned the '01 cars. So are the '99 and earlier cars not covered? If I had one I'd call the number in my letter - 1-800-630-2438 M-F 8AM-11PM EST.
