Rearwheel or crank
The ls1 cars range from about 285-290RWHP to as high as 320rwhp, the 305 i guess is just some number thrown out there by GM why they chose 305 i couldn't tell ya.

When car manufacteurers rate their cars horsepower its at the crank. GM just way underrated these cars.

As stated above, the 305 hp GM uses is horsepower measured at the crank. Virtually no manufacturers state hp ratings at the rear wheels. It's nice though that most LS1s when actually tested rate closer to 305 hp at the rear wheels (and not just the crank), implying 350 hp at the crank, unofficially.

just a little more info: they are rated at 310 by GM (at the crank) and the SS is rated at 325 by GM (at the crank). Now in reality they are putting down around 300 to 305 (no matter if its a Z28 or SS). The 98 99 2000 models were a little lower because the 2001 and 2002's got a different cam. Basically the range is from about 285/290 to about 305/310 at the rear wheels (with some freak cars getting like 315 to 320) the lower end usually being the pre-2001's. you can see what my 2002 got with about 5,000 miles on it.
