Rear pinion seal install
Rear pinion seal install
I have a 99 Z28 and am replacing the rear pinion seal (again). I think that I didn't get the correct pinion depth or the proper torque was applied to the pinion nut. I did not replace the crush sleeve either when I replaced the pinion seal (which I think is another no no). Does anyone know where I can go online and read up on this? Does anyone have any suggestions from past experience?
Just make sure the seal is flush and the yoke is free from burrs. I have a done a bunch of these (never more than once to the same car.....), and have never done anything other than yank and reinstall a la impact gun....
According to the Helms manual the proper procedure is.
Mark the location of the pinion nut with a paint stick or equivilant.
Remove the pinion nut counting the revolutions.
Change the seal.
Re-install the pinion nut counting the revolutions to the exact position that it was in. Then tighten it an additional 1/8 turn.

I was afraid of that AL SS590 M6 because I didn't do that the first time so the nut is currently where "I" left it at after the first change. I hate hind sight...................oh well. I guess it is time to take it to someone who knows what they are doing and pay out the *** for my mistake.
