I recently purchased my second ls1 f-body, its a 99 z28 and on my second night of having the car after driving for a while i noticed a strange odor when i would stop at stop lights i knew it was some kind of fluid of some sort but i couldnt pin point it. today i was brain storming the idea that it might be my rear end, and sure enough it was. On my trans am i used to own a 98 trans am and the same problem occured. The girdle, axle, differental, suspension, and exhaust had gear oil on them. The car runs perfectly fine and makes no noise. Is this normal in f-bodies? is my pinion, or axle leaking?
