i just got my car back from the shop tonight (had ticking sound when in gear). after i got off the freeway on my way home the rear end started making a really bad clunking noise whenever i turned while driving. i've got no idea what it is and the shop isn't open again until monday. for some reason i have a feeling that they beat the **** out of the car on a test drive and ****ed something up. the rear was fine before i took the car in to the shop (except for pinion seal leaking).

i was just wondering if anybody had any ideas on what it could be. also, what does it cost to get the rear replaced or rebuilt?

BTW, i also had the rear end fluid changed a few days ago as well.

Clunking on a left turn? If so, it's the annoying Torsen clutch-packs slipping.

Also, when you had the rear serviced, did they put the GM additive in there? And, did they use the new specs from the TSB? Recently, the recommended additive amount was increased.

it clunks on left and right turns and it did it a few times when i was going straight.

they did not put the additive in the rear when the fluid was changed. i asked them about it and they said that it wasn't really necessary and that they never put it in.

Same thing happened to me. I just said give me my money back and i will do it myself. Changed the fluid and added lucas oil. No additive is needed if you use lucas oil. No more clunking or grinding sound.

i'm taking it to a different shop on monday to see what they say. i'm hoping that it's something simple so i still have money to get my ZR1 wheels.

Well, from what I've heard, you can run full synthetic lube and you can get away with not using the additive. (Run straight RedLine)

Otherwise, use the GM additive or else you'll get the noise.

Does it happen under load (i.e. under throttle), or mostly when you are coasting or decelerating?

If it happens in the former, then it is definitely more serious. Thge Zexel does clunk alot under coasting turns...

it does the clunking when i'm just coasting as well.

is it possible for the u-joints to make that kind of noise. i know mine need to be replaced because they will make a little clunk type noise when the car downshifts sometimes. i was talking to a friend of mine and he said that it could be the torque arm if it's loose or if the bushings are shot.
