rear end ate up 4.10's in under 2k mi

I had a set of Motive 4.10's put in my car by LG motorsports and in under 2k miles a few teeth on pinon gear looked like a chisel got taken to them in the middle of the tooth. It wasn't a catastrophic failure it was still driveable. I took it back to them today and they said they are going to put another set in there with new bearings all the way around. So i guess my question is does any one else out there with 4.10's ever had the same problem? Which probably not! Cause that's my luck. Bad stuff like this always happens to me.

I haven't had this rear end long enough to even drag race it. I've only done highway stuff like vette's and bike's. If I dragged it then cool I could understand. But they didn't even give me a reason why that would have happened.

sounds like either you have a bad bearing that they should have looked at when they put the gears in or the didn't line them up to well. Did you have alot of whine?

I've got Motive 4.11's and have no problems other than the annoying whine. Grrrrr

You can see my old trashed 3.42's on my web site: www.BlackWS6.com/pics.htm

I'd go with the concept of something being installed incorrectly.

how did you drive when you first installed the gears? ask them how to properly break in those gears. if they don't heat up and cool bach down properly the first few times, they won't last very long. proper installation is crucial, but so is the first 1,000-1,500 miles. the 4.10 pinion is inherently not as resistant to improper setup/use do to the number of teeth.

the higher the gear the less beefy it is.

its actually more beefy and its a ford gear

4.10's have the smallest pinion gear known to man

First off,

One problem is you should have opted for GM gears.
After I screwed up two carriers, two sets of gears and a shizt load of money I found that the problem was my gears.....and guess what brand they were...HMMMmmm???

The whine people hear is the crappy gears (in most cases)
Almost all 4.10s have a little noise on decel , but not a whine all the time. If you have an irratating whine then chances are that the gear will eventually break and not whine anymore

if you go with the 4.10's make sure you break them in properly. call motive and have them explain how they want the gears they made broke in. they would much rather explain it to a customer than have their stuff trash mouthed if/when it breaks. remember, too, that those were originally designed for S-10 pickups. it is possible for 4.10's to live as long as you remember that its a 7.5" and not a 8.5" or a 12 bolt. if you want to put Ford stuff under your car, then you can go with the 4.11's the Red91TSIAWD spoke of.

the ford gears don't fit in a 7.5", and work, at least

It's not a Ford gear. It's a 4.11 gear set from Motive designed for a 2 series 10 bolt carrier and requires some machining to fit a 3 series carrier. But is stronger because it has thicker gear teeth.
