Rear Clunk

My 98 Z-28 T-6 has has a clunk coming from the rear for sometime when I take a right turn. It bangs going around the turn and again when the body levels out. No noise on left turns. This is loud. At Pocono Raceway, a corner worker told me they heard it when I came around the right hand hairpin curve.

I don't know when it started. I lubed the lower spring pads, new shocks, new poly bushings all around and new LCAs. I have torqued all of the bolts and have looked around for signs on contact with no clue. Could it be the differential? I have 45k miles. I do have a new Torsen T2r to install this winter.

Any ideas?

It is the differential. Both Auburn and Torsens seem to have it. It's a clunking sound during tight low speed turns. I usually get it on left turns. I had the differential serviced a while back and it helped out alot ( the noise went away for about 1.5k; I now get it occasionally). You might wnat to try that.

I had a very similar sound in mine too. It turned out to be a broken transmission mount. Check that out too. I got mine replace and have not heard it since.

i got the same problem but mines is more of a groaning noise if i cut left or right or if i pull out in reverse and make a turn then i really hear it, my car is also a 98 m6 with 29k miles, but my rear control arms are squeeky, gonna do a rear suspension overhaul. i know when i first got the car and i would shift into gears it would clunck i blamed u joints so when i went to put my gears in i just replaced all u joints and the tranny mount. i know when i loosened the yoke nut it wuz not tight at all, it came off real easy with no hard struggle, i men they arn't suppsed to be tightened all the way but this was really loose the crush shim wasen't even compressed.

I tightend/torqued it to specs ad no more cluncks or rough shifts.

This sounds like something more than the standard Torsen float noise. You shouldn't be able to hear that outside the car.

My '01 Z28 had a nasty clunk for a while. It turns out the the boot where the rear suspension mounts up wasn't seater properly.

I agree with GoFast908Z. Check the transmission mount. My car had a bad clunk also and thats what it turned out to be.
