Programmer for a 98?
I have a HPP3 for my '99 , and am happy w/ it - it was one of the mods that came w/ the car.
But, it is not a true programmer per se - it will allow you to add the power programming, change fan settings (in preset increments, not infinitely) , adjust for different tire heights & rear axle ratios, and alter shift points & firmness (A4 cars) .
For my car - w/ stock cam, intake, a cat-back, and some free mods - that's all I need, and seat of the pants feel tells me the HPP3 works.
Other will have different opinions - welcome to the World Wide Web !
If you anticipate "heavy mods" - Heads & cam, etc. then I would bypass this and go for something like an LS1 edit that I understand (no direct experience w/) is far more versatile.

hypertech IS worth the money if u have an auto car....shift firmness comes into play with a stall converter, shift points and rev limiter can be altered and my car now runs no hotter than 185 on the stock 195 degree thermostat.....on an M6 i wouldnt bother unless u do alot of gear changes or something...look for a used one somewhere.....they go for as low as a hndred bucks.

see him for custom programming it will be better then buying a programmer if you continue to mod

Wouldn't it be a good idea to change to a 180 thermostat? Fans may work less.

180 thermo may open sooner, but the fans won't kick on until the stock setting of like 217 for # 1, and 228 for # 2.
So, you are still running just as hot & the fans are working just as much.
