Ported Heads and Stock Cam

I was wondering of anyone has run mildly ported 241 castings or AFR's with the stock cam. I know, why would I want to do this?.......It's a waste without upgrading the cam. I want to get all the power that I can out of my car, and be 100% CARB legal. I already know I could pass emissions with a small cam, so please don't recommend that. I have an LS6 intake and most of the bolt ons, and am wondering what kind of gains I would see with ported heads. Has anyone done this? What were the gains?

Re: Ported Heads and Stock Cam

question has been asked several times, but sofar i have yet to see any actual data.

for the cost i don't think you'd gain anything impressive..maybe 15hp??

you'd be better off doing a rocker arm swap to get more lift out of the stock cam.

If the crane quick lift roller rockers were CARB legal I would run those with ported heads.....but I don't think they are. Sucks to live in california.

Unless they will keep you from passing the sniffer how would they know? They don't pop off valve covers and look do they? I didn't think they were that environazi-ish.....yet.

They don't yet, but they are moving in that direction. I just want to run a completely CARB legal setup. I could pass the sniffer with a small cam, but don't want to go that route.

Re: Ported Heads and Stock Cam

also, vinci high performance put a set of AFR heads on a completely stock 03 C5 convertible. put almost 40 rwhp on the stock tune.

Wow! Stock cam? Did they use stock or aftermarket roller rockers? 40 rwhp and no other mods is a great gain!

Please excuse me, an old gen1 engine owner here, but I've been reading Will Handzel's book (How to build High-performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8's) and on page 46 there is a table of stock GM camshafts with part numbers. It looks like P/N 12561721 (196/207 116LSA) was the '01 through '03 LS1 camshaft of choice for GM. It's a .467/.479 inch lift cam.

Then there's the '01 LS6 and the /02-'04 cams, P/N's 12560950 and 12565308 respectively. These cams were OEM in the LS6 and feature an additional .050 to .075"of valve lift, plus about six additional degrees of duration over the LS1 cams. It seems to me that you should be able to use a previously street-certified cam profile like this and still retain emissions certification. Isn't this true? With porting of your cylinder heads you should be able to really take advantage of the additional valve lift. However, since the LS6 cam is a small base circle cam, you'll need some additional parts like different length pushrods.

Then there's valves. Back a couple of pages (page 44) Will describes the lightweight LS6 valves, and the performance advantages of them. Since they are slightly longer than the LS1 valve stem, you can use them with the LS6 cam and not worry about custom length pushrods. They are much lighter than the LS1 valves and offer you better valvetrain control and throttle response. If you are removing the valves in order to port, why not upgrade at this time??

I really shouldn't have purchased this book, quite honestly. I have a barely broken-in smallblock and already I'm drooling over the possibility of my NEXT engine! Will it never end?

Hasn't for me.

Went from a 70 SS to a 00 SS and rarely miss it.

Re: Ported Heads and Stock Cam

Yeah I've been thinking of going the LS6 route lately. The LS6 parts come in a stock vehicle, so I could get a referee to sign them off. 40 rwhp with the afr heads sounds good to me, but at $2,200? For $2,200 I could probably put in a set of patriot stage II's and LS6 cam. I might just throw in one of the LS6 cams for a measley 15 rwhp.

yes completely stock everything. the only change was the heads. now, the heads were 63cc. but that would only account for about 5rwhp there. this was even on stock tune. this is a link to the dyno graphs of everything they changed. they did only one part at a time and documented the changes. http://www.vincihighperformance.com/...20PAGE%20.HTML

Re: Ported Heads and Stock Cam

If I do the cam first, which cam should I get? I don't want to have to rev the car to 6800...more like 6300 ish. Would I be better off getting the 01 LS6 cam, or the 02 cam and advancing it a few degrees? The 01 cam is supposed to have an effective range that begins at 2000 rpm as opposed to the 2200 of the 02. I really would like my power curve to start as early as possible. I know I'm limited as far as this is concerned with my two options.

Re: Ported Heads and Stock Cam

over on ls1tech there was someone who put AFR's on an intake and exhaust 02Z06 went from 376 to 414rwhp.nice little pickup. And if you get a cam its a waste of money to get a stock cam,if you want the car quiet go with either a LPE GT2-3 cam or the sleeper1/sleeper2 cam from MTI.they're quiet but make lots of power.
