Question port AND polish MAF?

I plan on doing the free mod this weekend that involves porting out the MAF. I thought about polishing the whole interior of the MAF while I've got it apart. Does anyone know if this will actually help airflow ir will it just be a huge waste of time?

I not sure about port and polishing the MAF. I bought the 85mm MAF from SLP compared to 75mm. They claim about 5 - 10 hp for the 85mm. It is worth having it port and polished but personally I wouldnt try messy with it.

Good Luck

Make sure you have a back up MAF ... this is pretty hit and miss mod ... especially on the '01 and '02.

Also understand the reality of what the mod does ... it does not increase or otherwise improve airflow. The MAF is a specifically calibrated device that provides specific air flow data back to the PCM.

Basically porting, polishing or MAF ends simply recalibrates the MAF. It's successful as a mod, because for the most part the end result leans the car engine out and lean generally results in more horsepower. But too lean causes pinging and KR to kick in.

The mod is particularly effective on '98s and '99s, as they have a reputation for running rich. The AFR on the '01s and '02s though is more optimum - mine was 12.5 from the factory - and porting the MAF is more likely to lean the engine out too much with the resulting pinging and KR.

Good Luck

Talking UPDATE:

Well, I completed my weekend project. Sorry I don't have pics of the process, no digital camera. The whole thing was fairly easy, provided you know what you're doing. The easiest part was removing all the metal in the middle of the MAF... a hacksaw took care of that no problem. I used a metal file to smooth down the majority of the remaining metal sticking up, and did rough finishing with the grinding stone for my dremel. I did purchase a polishing kit for the dremel, which cost me about 11 bucks, but was worth it. It came with 2 types of grinding stones, polishing drums and some polishing compound. Worked very well, and looked pretty good when I was done. Wish I had a pic to show of the finished product, but it's at least as good as the aftermarket MAF housings you can buy for about 50 bucks. Performance wise... not sure how much it actually helped, I don't have access to a dyno without paying 75 bucks just to run it a couple times. I'd say throttle response has improved a little though. No problems with the computer or knocks or anything like that, so I'm pretty happy with it.
