Hi, I have an 01 Z28 convertible that has a multitude of problems and I could really use some help instead of taking it to the shop. About two months ago the car became really hard to start when cold. It's not a security issue as that light goes off just like it's supposed to. It's like it's losing fuel pressure. If you leave the key in the "on" position for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes it starts with no problem. It doesn't matter if you try and start it at all, it doesn't seem to make a difference. After it's warm, it starts with no problems. I also had the SES light come on. Autozone scanned it and it came up a P1416 code (twice). "Secondary Air injection (AIR) System Bank 2" is what the code means. I know this is something to do with the AIR pump and logic suggests to me to check the check valves and hoses. But will this make the car hard to start when cold, and if not do I need to look at injectors or my pressure regulator for the pressure loss? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Once I get it to start normally again, I get to work on the rear end. I'll call that camaro repair part 2--Thanks in advance guys!!!--Rich

the air pump should not affect the starting of the car.

get the fuel pressure checked.

when was the last time you had a tune up...plugs, wires, fuel filter...etc?

 

no tune up as of yet, I haven't really given a tune up much thought because after 3 minutes with the key on, it starts up and runs like a raped ape!! I've looked at the air filter and it's ok. How much is a fuel pressure test approx? I can have the p1416 code removed and it won't be a problem anymore. I didn't think the air pump would be the cause of hard starting. I did replace the fuel filter underneath the left seat. I have noticed the air pump squealing some, as well as a "ticking" when it's cold. After a few minutes no engine noise at all and man does this car scream if you lay into it. Very frustating

 

Had P1416 before, didn't affect start-ups. Passenger side air check valve was just clogged, replaced it.

 

You should try the basics like checking fuel pressure, cleaning the MAF sensor, replacing the fuel filter, and replacing the spark plugs. Also, find someone with a scanner (like AutoTap, HPTuners or EFI Live) and have them go for a ride to scan the car. My guess is it might be fuel pump related.
