P0410: Where do I start?

I started the car (after sitting for about 8 hours) and was cruising at about 30 miles an hour in 4th or 5th gear (can't remember which). After about 5 minutes, the light came on and I went to Autozone to get it scanned.

P0410: Secondary Air Injection Malfunction

I tried clearing the code but it came back up instantaneously. Where do I start with this? I'm not sure where to look. Nothing's been modified on the car in the past year except for a set of plugs about a month ago. Car has approx. 65K miles.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here's what the dealer would most likely do if you took it in for service...

Wow, that's a complete mess. Any chance of the dealer fixing it for free even though it's not under warranty (emissions-related problem)?

No warranty - it's yours. If/when my car ever throws any AIR code I'm going to just delete the whole AIR system, and the associated codes.

Take a test light to the circuit and find out where the voltage drops off.

I have no idea about electronics. What circuit?

Go to a tuner and get the Air system "tuned out."

That's emissions. What is the federal emissions warranty? I thought like 8/80...or 6/60....hmmm...

See, that's what I thought! I was actually told 100K miles but that number might be a bit high. I can't take it to the dealership until next week but I'm gonna search around for proof that they have to fix it for free.. If anyone else knows for sure, I'd love to hear your input!

I'm pretty sure he's right about the federal emissions warranty, check in your owners manual. BUT if the emissions on your car have been tampered with, they are probably going to tell you to go fly a kite.I think there is a 1-800 # in your owners manual reguarding emissions. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the checkup. I've pretty much deducted that it's the air pump: the fuse is good, the relay is good, and I don't hear the whine at initial startup. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to take the panel off that covers it, and start it again to see if it's working. If not, I'll buy a new one and it will hopefully fix it..

With a little luck, I've evaded the dealership again!!

Re: P0410: Where do I start?

Well, I took the panel off so I could see if the air pump is turning. It's definitely turning, or at least making the whine like it's turning.

So my question is, what else could it be? The air pump seems to be fine, could it be a check valve or that EGR looking thing in the back of the intake? Any opinions are much appreciated.

Re: P0410: Where do I start?

Federal warranty on emissions parts is 8 yr 80k miles, but it isn't ALL emissions parts.
