oil question

I used 53-30 for my first oil change.
Is this good or should I have done 10w-30?

Anyone know?

Thanks guys, cause I'm hearing alot that I should use 10w-30 cause its thicker and has more protection.

I dunno!

I would use either a synthetic 5W-30 or Mobil 5W-30...synthetic is your best bet, but you can trust the Mobil 5 weight.

Thanks,

I guess I'm ok with 5w-30 then. How bout oil filters? Stick to mobil one or is the new fram extra guard good?

Use either. They end up the same once warmed up. You may loose a little more oil at startup with the 5-30. Unless you live in a very cold climate 10-30 is ok. 5-30 is a safe bet.

STAY AWAY FROM FRAM!!! Either use the AC Delco or Mobil1. If you use the AC Delco, get the one for the 2001 5.3 Silverado. It's the same as the LS1 filter but an inch or so longer for more filter area. Studies have proven Fram (altough once a good brand) now uses a different maunfacturer and doesn't provide adequate protection anymore. I think the problem with Fram was that the new design allows oil to bypass the filter and allow contaminants to remain in the oil flow.
There was a guy from www.LS1.com that actually cut a bunch of filters open and did a VERY in depth comparison. I think he was some kind of engineer or something.

Just swap the filter and add another quart of oil.

Get rid of the Fram, I had alot of noise at startup when I had the Fram filter. I read that article, my jaw dropped, immediatly went out and bought a AC Delco filter, changed the filter, added oil and guess what? No more noise at start up!!!

You might but I would get the tool for $2 that attaches to the end of your socket wrench. Be sure to fill the oil filter up with oil before replacing it. Put a little oil on the gasket first as well.
