oil filter change intervals
oil filter change intervals
I finally started using Mobil 1 oil and I plan to change it every 5K miles unless I do some really hard driving. For those of you who go longer than 3K for oil changes, how long do you wait to change your filter? I use the K&N because it's very easy to change since I have LT headers.
Just change the filter whenever you change the oil. Just don't go too far between intervals and you will be fine. To me it would just be a pain in the *** to change the filter one day and do the oil another.

Don't do it. Filters are cheap insurance... Every oil change. And, I will stick to my 3 months or 3000 miles. I actually go about 4 months, but that is still only like 1000 miles....
So you guys change the oil at 3K even with fully synthetic oil? Is it OK to go a little longer with changing the filter-because it seems like a PITA to still change the filter every 3K.

oil change
on my z28 using mobil 1 synthetic, i change oil and filter every 3k. i bought a 55 gallon drum. (i have a garage, and friend went in on it too, $1050, anyway..) according to mobil's specs, some cars can go up to 7k inbetween changes. i use this on my 95 blazer, and change it every 6-7k miles. been 5 years and no problems, still runs smooth. 93 octane and above, use 3.5k miles max. 108 octane use i month/ 1,000 miles recommended.
Many sythetic oils can go up to 10,000mi without losing any significant performance. However, this is under normal driving conditions. I change my oil and filter about every three months unless there has been severe stress on the engine like racing, or dyno days. In that case, I will change it sooner. I also use Mobil 1, but might try Royal Purple next.
Okay, I'll jump up here with my unpopular disagreement with the whole '3,000 mile interval' BS the oil companies and auto shops spew at the gullable public. They are the only ones who have anything to gain by getting you to change your oil every 3,000 miles.
There is a reason that GM set up our cars' computers to tell us to change the oil at 5,000 miles or so. The reason is that there is no need to perform oil changes every 3,000 miles anymore. Oil formulas are far better than they used to be.
A few years ago Consumer reports did a study with NY City taxi cabs. They ran one set of test cabs for 100,000 miles with oil change intervals set at 3,000 miles. The other test group received oil changes every 5,000 miles. After the 100,000 miles each engine was torn apart and inspected. There was NO difference at all. That was even with conventional oils, not synthetics. Synthetics will last at least about twice as long as normal conventional oils. It's still a good idea to change the filter but the oil will last longer.
If people want to change their oil every 3,000 miles. That's fine. It's cheap insurance against wear. But I put around 50,000 miles per year (total) on my cars. I'd be continuously changing oil. I run Amsoil synthetic. I change it every 10,000 miles. I change the filter at 5,000, 7,500 and again when the oil gets changed. My Amsoil rep insists that I'm wasting the oil by not leaving it longer but still takes my money when I ask for more.
Bottom line: The car says to change it every 5,000 or so with conventional oil. If excessive wear was going to occur with that interval I would think GM would be liable for a lot of repairs. 3,000 is a huge waste.
