Oil filter change
Oil filter change
Just changed the oil in my '02 Z. I was wondering if it is not good to change the filter everytime I change the oil. On the surface, it seems that it would be good to have a fresh filter every time, but I can see where it may be possible to cause extra wear on initial startup to put a new filter everytime. Anybody got some "real" smarts in this area? I'd appreciate it.
I dont know if I quailify for having real smarts.. but I would change my filter every time I changed my oil. Some people running synthetic oil will change the filter like every 2500 and only change the oil every 5000... so either way I would make sure the filter gets changed at least every 3000 miles and possibly the oil too depending on what kind you are using.
And if you're worried about starting the car with an empty filter, just pour some oil in the filter before you screw it onto the engine. It's not like the old cars where you had to fish the filter around the axhaust to find the mounting surface. It's right there in the open so you shouldn't even spill any oil.
How would a new filter cause damage to the engine??
If your concern is the motor running dry for a moment, do like "2002Z28SSConv" said (which is actually the proper thing to do) and fill the filter with oil before you install it.....................then, as long as the engine is full, and the filter is full, it will get oil quick enough, and all that new oil will be filtered by a brand-new filter!!!
(new oil + new filter = un-damaged motor
)
