IMO, not necessary in most cases. Running a turbo or endurance racing are where I'd think about getting one.

If you just want one, it won't hurt. For A4's a trans cooler is much more important.

 

I was thinking the same thing. I don't like it when my car gets hot, it makes me nervous. I had an '85 F-Bird before with the 2.8 so I'm used to cars breaking down on me. It can't hurt, remember that you'r oil is the sole means of cooling off the bottom end of your motor.
