oil capacity?

Is the oil capacity for the LS1 5 or 5.5 qts? I'm asking because ever since I've owned my car...a little more than two years now...I've always used 5 qts and have had the oil level at the top afterwards. The more I am checking out these threads, I'm noticing that I should be using 5.5 qts. If this is true, why is my dipstick showing full after an oil change?

Owners manual says 5.5 quarts. If you don't have a copy, you can download an electronic one at www.mygmlink.com. It only takes a minute to register and it's free.

I'm sorry for hijacking this thread but I'm sure this subject has been beat to hell on here... What weight oil can you use with the 02 z28 LS1 ? I have 12 quarts of Royal Purple 5w20 from my previous vehicle laying in my garage. Would that stuff be safe in the LS1 ?

Yeah, that's too thin. You want at least a 30-weight for our cars. If you're in a colder climate (like up by Canada), either a 0w30 or 5w30 will do. If you live in the mid~lower regions where temps never really get that cold, either a 5w30 or 10w30 will do.

Personally, I like to recommend the German Castrol Syntec 0w30. It's one of the few true synthetics on the market and costs a little more. But, many of the oil junkies have posted great results in their oil sample analysis that they sent off. The trick is to make sure it says "Made in Germany" on the back.

I guess the other 1/2 qt. is to get a jump start on the oil replenishment until the next change.....

You can actually run a bit more oil then what the dipstick says. evidentally the ls1 has a high crankcase or something and a lot of the guys into roadracing and autox run an extra quart to stave off oil starvation during turns. just an fyi.

6qts for me too..
2002 Z..

Blackrat has it right.. its why I run more...

as for oil replenishment. .I have never ever had to add any to top it off before an oil change and I only change the oil when the light for the oil change comes on.
