Octane
Octane
I hate to sound cheap but lately I have to wonder if I can justify using ONLY 92 ocatne. Here in the midwest 92 ocatne is the highest rating of gas around and that was ALL I used. Unfortunatly tonight kind of made me wonder what are the REAL facts for our LS1's where fuel is concerned.
I just paid :
$ 1.89 a gallon for 92 octane
If I alternate with 91 octane to save like 15 cents will there be any decrease in performance?

I am running 89 at the moment.
30 cents a gallon cheaper then 93... idle is rougher but not by much. MPG is a little worse but I am not hot rodding all over town on it too... A lower grade gas may give poorer peformance but it's not going to blow up your car. Unless your planning on hitting the strip or have to show your kahonas to everyone that revs you, why not go lower.

I wish to god that I could run 92 or 93 octane in my car. I currently run 91 (the highest commonly available in Southern California) and I get bad pinging at high rpm in warm weather (75-80+). I also get a significant power loss as a result of the pinging when it sets the timing back. I have heard good things about the torqo (sp?) brand octane booster, but I haven't tried it yet.

Man, there is a BIG misconception about grades of gas!!! I've been running 87 octane in my car since pretty much day one. YES, I have run tanks of 91 octane (especially before I went to the track) but since the BOOK STATES:
...........it's totally wasted $$$ and fuel, and you're car would actually run worse through an emissions test. Since we have to have cars e-tested here in Ontario, that's a consideration, and it's been proven that a car will run cleaner on lower octane gas than higher octane (because there is less un-burned fuel).
I realize some of you may think it's a sacrilege to run 87 octane regularily, but my dad is a mechanic, and has assured me that my engine won't "blow up" because I'm using it. And again, the OWNER'S MANUAL says it's OK, so while the car is under WARRANTY, I have no problem doing what the book says
(although I'm not stupid enough to run 87 at the track, because I realize I'll be running with slightly retarded timing, and hence a little less performance
).
- 87 octane is acceptible
- 91 octane is recommended

not in Iowa
I've driven thru IL and noticed as soon as I cross into IL yea, 93, NOT in Iowa anywhere. That is where I get 92 Octane at the Amaco BP. Even 92 Oct is not available at other stations,,,
I use 91, thats the highest here in California, and I got some pinging. Then I installed the 160 thermostat and the problem had gone away, for the most part. If I had 92 I would use it, but im stuck with 91. There is one 76 station with 100 octane. When I mixed some of that in, my problems went away. But it is $4.29 per gallon. 91 is $2.01 a gallon.
