O2s

So my cousin has a 99 vette ls1 and he keeps going through o2 sensors almost every couple of months. He has tried all different kinds of o2s but they keep going out. His mods are long tube headers with gutted cats and a tune that deleted the rear o2s. He also has a fast intake manifold and CAI. What could be causing this. He thinks it might be an electrical issue what do you guys think?

Thanks

I have seen cars do this when the 02 sensors aren't getting hot enough. There is nothing wrong with them, they are just coding for the not switching properly. What codes is it throwing?

There was no code he said that his car is running crappy and he changed the plugs and wires and didn't help. But when he hooked it up to the scanner the o2s weren't heating up like you were saying what causes that. Thank u for the reply

I've found in my experiences that the factory O2 sensors outlast all the other brands. Do his sensors have the square style plug or the flat style plug?

Yeah......thanks for that. The original poster said this car is a 99 vette. Which is why I asked.

I had a set of LT headers years ago and I too, went through O2's frequently. I never could solve the problem...when I took the headers off, I discovered a serious exhaust leaks all around where the headers bolted to the heads. I had the motor out at the time for an LS6 swap and went with set of shorty headers and my O2's have been fine ever since and that was 6 years ago.

I just blocked the codes on my car. I actually had this happening on my GTP. The only way to get them hotter is to put some back pressure into the system or get them closer to the engine.

He took it to a shop and the verdict is that his headers are getting too hot and are destroying the o2s. The mechanic said that he could just wrap his headers and that should fix it. I was thinking if the o2s were getting heat soak could we just wrap them in asbestos? or like a spark plug sleeve to protect it from the heat?
