o2 SS = crappy gas mileage

I was shocked at my mileage for the first 5,000 miles or so too. But now I get between 15 and 18 mpg with mixed driving. If you keep the RPM's between 1,000 and 1,500 you'll get better mileage too. I usually rev 1st gear to about 2,500, shift to 3rd, and upshift from there every time it hits 1,500 RPM. The only reason I keep it in 1st so long is to avoid the skip shift. But don't think that I baby my car either. That's just when I'm in granny mode. I quite frequently shift straight from 1st to 5th at 45MPH when I romp on it. Oh how I love torque.
My best mileage so far was 27 on the highway running between 70 and 85 mph.

Other mods have a higher priority. Plus I want to get a predator or LS1Edit someday. Then I can just program it out. I'm so cheap! It would be a waste of money to buy the !CAGS now and be able to program it out later on for free.
Oh - I like the sound of the exhaust too.

I get about 220 on a tank of gas in the city (and I drive it pretty hard at least once a day). On the highway, I get 30 MPG cruising at 80 in 6th.
I run 93 octane for every tank and use synthetic oil (some people say that helps squeeze a couple more miles out of a tank of gas)

To give an example of what I think is disappointing mileage:
Yesterday , I put on about 150 miles - the majority ( ~ 125 - 130 of it) being highway.
I romped on it several times, but pretty much cruised at 70 or 75.
I was reading about 9/16 tank after 149.8 miles - it took 7.187 gallons to fill up.
That's 20.84 MPG that tank - not real impressive.
The car has around 44,700 miles on her, BTW.
Best ever has been 24 on the highway - that was after using some Red Line Fuel Injection cleaner.
Good stuff - I recommend it.
At any rate, I guess that's what I get w/ a A4 & a 2800 stall, although I think my car is running rich at higher RPM's based on the last dyno I had.
How to solve that rich running is another issue - ??
Good Luck !

well i have more hp than you and i dont beat on my car alot and i still get around 160 to a full tank so i wouldnt be too concerned. as for getting beat by stock z's all day why not do some small mods and then see who is getting there a$$ beat.

I started a new thread on this topic before reading yours. I have a 99 automatic with 44600 or so miles and I am getting less than 200 per tank also. Like yours I feel the car should also be running alot stronget than it is. There is a slight odor occasionally in the car and I have no clue as to where it is coming from. I have also noticed that in cold temps the car ALWAYS has steam coming out of the tailpipes, is this normal? The smoke has no real color or odor it's just the steam you always get ehen the car is still cold, but it never goes away. Would it be expensive to have the 02's checked? What else could be wrong?

Try to not drive you car so hard and you will get better mileage...Do you actually divide the miles by the gallons? Or do you just go off mileage?
I did get 30mpg in my 98 A4 Z28 on a trip...That was at 80mph on cruise control the whole way, and yes I have witnesses that were in the car with me.

Nevertheless it does take awhile for a engine to break in. I had a friend buy a ZZ4 crate motor and put it in a 70 Nova. At first it would not spin the tires or power brake. Now it will lay rubber as long as you want it to. Just took awhile for it to break in.

I have documented my gas mileage since day 1.
Things I noticed were when I 1st got her, she only averaged 13-15mpg like you
after a few months she went up a little, but then I added a corsa catback, aftermarket lid and filter, also the FTRA from www.fasttoys.net and now my gas mileage is up to around 17-19.
I don't know what attributed to this increase, was either the car breaking in completely, or was it the mods. All I know is that I am consistently at 17-19mpg.
Take my post for what its worth, but this is just my expierence

Your'e not alone in the high mileage dept. A few months back I posted a note about my gas mileage on a trip back and forth from El Paso, TX to Las Vegas, NV. 472 miles, door to door, in my 2000 SS w/ 6 speed, I averaged 37.6 mpg. That's 362 miles to the tank boys.. You gotta love that sixth gear, it's great for the highway! As it is now, I've got just over 27K on the motor, and even after the new exhaust system (see sig), I'm still averaging about 215-225 a tank. No grandma here either, I drive the **** outta her.. The same can't be said for my 2001 T/A auto though. On the highway, I can't squeeze over 300 on a tankful of premium

Well I did burn off the rest of the tank today and filled er up, I am getting 13.5 MPG. And that was babying the carap out of it. What the hell is wrong with this car!! It's an auto with like 44 thousand and change on the clock. Please look at my above reply about the problems I am having and let me know what can be done, PLEASE!!!
