Angry Noisy...pulley?

When my SS is running I can hear a noise that seems to be coming from one of my pulleys on my serpentine belt, and when I turn on my a/c it gets a lot louder. It almost sounds like its having a hard time spinning or something. Anyone know what this is/ how much to get rid of? It is very annoying (especially in drive thru's ). Any feedback will be appreciated.

Is it a rattling or hissing type noise that comes and goes?

Take the serpentine belt off and start it up for a minute and see if the noise goes away. If it squeals like a pig and but goes away when you take the belt off it's most likely the top tensioner. Get a new tensioner and belt and you will be good to go.

They're not that expensive as I just had to do the same thing myself. I think the tensioner was $57 and the belt was $20ish

I don't really know how to explain it. It's more like a rattle.

I HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS ON MINE
The only way to fix it is to go to the double
row pulley setup that GM swithched to because of
this problem. There is a TSB on it. This is the only
way to fix it that works. If you need more I'll
try to find what I can in my papers.
Its a steady whiny chirping sort of sound that makes
your car sound like a POS especially at idle.
Trust me Soap, belt grease, etc will not work
You have to get the new belts, tensioner, and
pulley. My warranty covered it.

hes talking about the EXACT same prob I have. Its not the belt. This an impossible noise for a belt to make. The best description is it sounds like rocks flowing through the radiator type noise. I still have the noise and have been told it is the a/c compressor clutch.

I have the same problem. I've been trying to find out what it is. It sounds like a rattle type sound comming from the accessory drive belt area. You can hear it a lot more if you lie down under the front of the car.

Guys the double row pulley is the fix.
I did it and I know others too especially
on 99's. I could link to the SLP thread I had on
it but the board is closed.
GM changed the design for this very reason

I'd really like to find out how to fix it, and how much. This noise has gotten louder since I bought the car. I've got to fix it. And why does it get louder when the a/c is turned on?

Ahh, yes... The famous idler pulley problem... I personally know of at least three 99's which have had the very same problem. Sounds like a flock of parakeets under the hood.

Because it puts more pressure on the idler pulley. Just change it and you'll be fine. I see even the part numbrs have now been listed.
