Ah the classic LS1 piston slap. Nothin to worry about. Although some people will say its the end of the world, yet there hasnt been a problem ever linked to it. Go figure.

Read the manual. It tells you which to run. Use 5W... in cold climates 10W... in warmer. You'll get the exact temps from the manual. But I'm not going out to my car to find out for you. Sorry. Here in FLA I use 10W30 synthetic Amsoil. But it hardly ever freezes here.

amsoil is some very good oil, expensive as hell though. but you take a look @ it looks soo pure. i use mobile 1 10w30 here because miami is hot as hell, even though they say syntetic oils are soo good that hot climates wont break them down. the car calls for 5w30 it says it on your oil filler cap underhood. but the manual says you can run 5w30 10w30, If you look in your manual it tells you that the thickest you should go is staright 30, anything else such as 10w40 20w50 is not good therefore not recommended.

I've got he ol piston slap too. I did notice that when I used Mobil 1 15w50 for race engine's, it made it much worse! I use Mobil 1 5w30 all the time now. I'll just have to live w/ it.

If it's a 99 (I think) there's a recall for the idler pulley, that might be it

thats an LS1 for you nah ive had the same problem too, if im not mistaken its because the cold air allows more to go into the combustion chamber but at the sametime your fuel isnt richened so it would cause that ping and after your car is running the computer will adjust if i am wrong would someone correct me please???

The piston slap issue dates back to 1997 and the first LS1s in the Corvette. My 02 Z makes the sound, but it uses no oil, and shows no other ill effects.
You can read an article about it at http://www.idavette.net/hib/02ls6/page5.htm

It is a 2000 but you never know it could be the same thing...some people dont learn from mistakes...and you know something else, my car had so many problems with oil consumption.. they ran test after test on it and finally they began replacing pistons, piston rings and some other things and now it is almost every other oil change that the car burns oil..After they supposedly "fixed" the problem the car burnt 2 quarts of oil in 3000 miles...so who knows...i think that my car was built on a holiday with all the probs i have had with it...and am continuing to have....
