No Power??

No Power??
My friend just bought a 98' LS1 T/A (A4 102,000 miles) and she brought it over today so I could see it and drive it. I figured I'd show her how well the car would turn the tires over, but when I did it, I couldn't get over 2,000 rpm doing the brake torque. I then pulled the car down in first and got to about 3,000 rpm and punched it. It jumped good, but seemed like it fell on its face immediately. I've driven 6 cyl cars that pulled harder. There is something holding it back. What could it be? I'm new with the whole LS1 thing. I'm an LT1 guy. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: No Power??
It is stock, but I've driven stock LS1's before. Like I said, the car wouldn't even brake torque past 2,000 rpm. It pulled like a 6 cyl. car. There is something wrong computer wise, I think. It has first gear labeled on the shifter console, so it shouldn't have 2.73's, right? I know it is that way for LT1 cars. Also, after I tried doing the pathetic brake torque, the SES light came on. I'll go to autozone and have them scan it tomorrow. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Benji

Re: No Power??
That I don't know. She just brought it over today for the first time. I guess it could be a clogged fuel filter, but this thing is weak. My car stock with bad plug wires, missing badly, would outrun this thing. I guess I can check the fuel pressure tomorrow. I appreciate the help. Any other suggestions?

Re: No Power??
i cant power brake over like 1700 ish.... lol but when i punch it i spin threw first, and part of second
seems a bit wierd if it is pulling slow after 3k...it should pull even harder on that rpm!

Re: No Power??
1700? Really? I thought it should spin up no problem in first gear. It definitely didn't spin through first and second when I let off of the brake. It feels like it wants to start pulling hard, but just doesn't. It sits you back for an instant, and then just falls off. I'm going to check the fuel pressure tomorrow.

As stated above a stock converter will brake stall to about 1800 max.
Fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, clean MAF.
102K cats could be partially plugged.
2.73 geared 98s stock, are generally 14 flat to 13.8 cars anyway.

Re: No Power??
yeah most likely it is traction control... torque management is only used between 1-2 gear shifts i though... and it is only 15% of the torque so that shouldnt be the problem... look for a little asr button above your radio... click the little bastard off and go have come fun

Re: No Power??
Well, she just got back from AutoZone and they said that all 4 O2 sensors are bad. How is this possible? It passed emissions testing (just requires no SES light). The light only came on right after I let off of the brake trying to do the brake torque (after the emissions testing). She is going to have the back ones turned off, and I guess replace the front two, but why did all of these go out at the same time? It has me baffled. I guess this problem could make the car run like this? Thanks for the help guys.

Re: No Power??
someone coulld have run some kind of fuel treatment that trashed the sensors.
maybe in the "clean up and prep" by the person or dealer who sold it to her.
the rear sensors won't have any affect on the running condition of the car, so just do the fronts like you said

Re: No Power??
I just talked to the guy that sold her the car and he believes that the right cat is clogged. We don't have emissions here, so I'm going to go knock all of the stuff out of it. It makes sense if the exhaust is stuffed up. The rears will read lean and the fronts would read rich. Or something like that.

Re: No Power??
I highly doubt the car's traction control is holding it back. The only time mine's turned off is at the track and my car doesn't feel faster with it turned off.
Like the others said, if it has 102K miles and is stock, the catalytic converters are probably shot. Mine went bad at 65K, so I can only imagine how hers are if they're original. Does the exhaust smell like rotten eggs or sulfur?
