Question No cats means not street legal?

If I get QTP LT Headers with their Y-Pipe, since I will have no cats, will I NOT pass emissions? And not be street legal? Anyway around this?

You won't be able to pass if the look for them and they dont see them. Its only illegal if you get caught.

I have also been told that they (here in NC anyway) won't pass the car if the cats have been moved from there original "Factory" place, like with some of the long tubes I have seen you can do. Anybody hear anything about this also?

Only if they look. Smoq requirements are that the cats stay in the factory location, which is not possible with LT's. It is a risk you are going to have to take. Do you actually think the people at the inspection places know where the factory cats were located? I doubt they do.

Considering they do that everyday for a job. I think they know exactly where it should and shouldn't be. Ferrari, maybe not but something as common as a Camaro, i'm pretty sure they do.

In Charlotte you will not pass...
Former NC auto inspector here.
Find a "friendly" inspector and buy him a case of beer.

i had my car inspected last month and they didnt look, but where i live they dont do a smog test, only require that you have cats. you can probably get away with it, but keep the stock setup just in case, and worst case scenario you spend one day out of the year swapping the two.

I don't know about Texas, but in Charlotte you would have problems. They rival Kalifornia in their inspections and laws regarding mods. Mods would be noticed and you would fail.

Better - move to Florida. Just as easy on emissions and no freezing cold winters. I ask myself why I moved up here every day.

I found this on a site:

Under Federal EPA Regulations, replacement of original equipment catalytic converters is allowed only if the original converter(s) is missing, or the vehicle has more than 50,000 miles or is at least five years old and the need for a replacement has been established and documented, or a local inspection program has determined the existing converter is in need of replacement.

I know of people who passed inspection when they had off-road pipes on; you can probably get away with it, just be careful where you get it inspected!

You'd be surprised at the variance in inspection "quality". Here in VA, we do emissions AND safety inspections. Some places will give your car a through going over. Other places will just glance at the car, make sure the brakes work, and give it a pass.
