Newbie Exhaust questions
I am obviously new to the board as you can see by my count
<-----
Looking forward to talking on the forums.
I just purchased my 98 z28 camaro, and I love it...obviously. The previous owner put on flowmaster mufflers on there. I love the sound of them, very loud. I am looking for and exhaust system and headers. I checked out flowmaster systems but the only problem is they only give you one tip. I really like the dual exhaust look. Hoping to upgrade to true dual exhast eventually.
Basically my question is...
Is there an exhaust system out there (and headers possibly too), that is reasonably priced, has a low rumble similar to the flowmasters, and you can still get that dual exhaust look. Even a true dual exhast system would be cool too. Im finally done with my rambling on, if you guys actually made it this far
. Thanks in advance for any info.

I heard from a lot of people and read a lot of threads about flowmasters and said, its one of the worst exhaust systems out there. I have flowmasters and im trying to get rid of it, it sounds good but not enough.
If you like your car loud then go for SLP loudmouth or get a cut-out.....just the cut-out itself gives better gains and better sound than flowmasters. About the headers, im pretty sure that someone will fill you in on that.

nearly every cat back that is specifically designed for the camaro is a "dual outlet" system. look into Corsa, B&B, ATR, Hooker, Magnaflow, Borla, SLP loudmouth
the flowmaster mufflers are well known for thier sound, but are also well known for being somewhat restrictive compared to other brands (listed above).
for what you want, the most expensive part of it will be the headers. for a decent hp gain you need to look into at least midlenghts, for the best gain longtubes are the way to go. either one will set you back about $500, add on $200 or so if you want them ceramic coated (highly reccomended). some will come with Ypipes like the mids, i know the mac middies do. but the long tubes require purchase or fabrication of a ypipe. if you have a shop fab up a ypipe you could go ahead and have them do the whole "true duals" setup if you have the cash (not an easy venture but doable).

The Flowmaster muffler is one of the worst mufflers you can add to our cars. I assume it's because the flow isn't straight through, but rather some it has to do a 180* and come back out the same side it came in. ???
I've got a Flowmaster muffler on my '01 WS6, and although I love the sound, it robs horsepower. So, I added a McCord Power Plate electric cutout in the I-pipe, directly under the rear passenger seat.
On the dyno, it showed a 13 RWHP gain over the Flowmaster ... simply by opening the cutout on the 2nd pull.
Personally, I love the sound of the cutout wide open, and leave it there most of the time. However, when I'm on a long trip (like when we go to Bowling Green next month), there's a drone about 2000 RPM, and cruising at 80 in 6th with the 4.11 gear keeps me right at 2000 RPM. So, I just close the cutout when I get on the road, and open it up again when I get to my destination.
A cutout would be my recommendation.

I currently have no muffler on my car and I love the sound, but I want to put a muffler on so I can run stock in autocross. I was wondering what the best possible thing to do was. Could I put the stock muffler on with a cutout and get the same sound and hp gain as no muffler? Or should I get a high performance muffler with a cutout. Would this make any difference in sound or hp gains? Also, if there happens to be any autocross people out there, would any of these setups be legal in stock class or do I have to use the stock muffler with no cutout?

I would just buy the X crossover (Dr. Gas is good) and whatever mufflers you want (Dynomax bullets would be my choice) and then have the exhaust shop fab up the rest. The only "hard" part would be if you wanted to have tailpipes. It can be done but not many people do it, most just run dumps before the axle. Also, you may lose a little ground clearance w/ true duals over the single Y setup but I don't think it's a big deal, really.
Welcome
I'm sorta in the same boat. Ijust bout an 01 and I need to figure out what I'm gonna do for my cat back. I know headers will prolly be middies so I'm going with MACs (I also need emissions, so no LTs)
For my cat back I was thinking of the SLP Loudmouth and a cutout. I know, most people will say the loudmouth is loud enough and no cutout is needed, but damnit it's my car!!!
I had flowmasters on my 95 and I liked the way it sounded. People say Flowmasters suck, but I don't have any complaints.

WTF is a cutout?
WTF is a cutout?
When capped, the exhaust gases will travel all the way through your muffler in the back. When uncapped, the gases will exit from the location of the cutout, bypassing the whole rear section of the exhaust, thus gicing you more hp.
Some people put cutouts even on Y-pipe, before the cats.
Usually the capping/uncapping is done manually by removing three wingnuts. Many people prefer not to crawl underneath the vehicle and therefore install an electric plate to open and close the cutout remotely by using a swith installed somewhere on the dash.
Glad to be of help!

Iv'e been trying to find out if it will pass emissions because i dont want to waste my money on shorties and i want the loudmouth.
I just installed the Flowmaster cat-back on my car today, and I like it. The car now sounds like a hi-po car should sound
. Maybe the muffler itself is more restrictive than some, but I took it for a rip and the car still feels like it pulls just as well as before?
For the price, I don't think I did too bad
