Listen for engine noise after warm-up. Do some hard braking and check for rotor warpage. Listen for "clunks" or "tinks" from the driveline. I'm sure I'll think of more...

Re: New to this so please help me

this is prolly not the case with yours but i would aways check since i got screwed on mine....

Look in the trunk and see if there are any holes in the back from a drill bit.... lift up the carpeting and make sure because on my car the guy that owned it prior to me drilled like 15 holes into my gas tank when he put his stereo in.

Also, hit the throttle and take it up past 110 because that moron that had my car too programmed something wrong and once my car got to 110 it just bogged and would go any fast.... my motor wanted to go fast it just seemed like it was getting held back buy something (it wasnt a governer or anything like that i believe)

Check the windows because my window mortors suck any they periodically dont work.

hope this helps.... Dakota

Don't think that if it doesn't come w/mods it has never been modded or raced. Many demod before selling.

If any panel doesn't line up, or if there is any overspray or signs or body work it has probably been wrecked even if Carfax doesn't show it. They just didn't report it to the insurance.

Check the tires. If they're worn on the inner or outer treads the front end needs allignment. If there are new tires, they may be hiding it. Something to consider.

Check rear end for leaking.

Most of all, don't get too eager to buy. If you have doubts or it isn't what you really want, be patient. Something else will come around.

Re: New to this so please help me

something u might look into, look at the factory options on it if u are interested in keeping it for the rest of ur life. i just bought a 99 convertible Z and dropped $1200 in a new clutch/ flywheel (oem is best stuff) and payed about that much more cuz teh idiot had burned out the synchros. It was worth it to me because the thing is i found that they didnt make many of my car, and someday it'll be a bit more valueable than the base Z28. (thats very far in the future) but i have a convertible 6 spd with all factory appearance options and extras (-minus traction controll remarkably lol). so if the production numbers are low on yours (dream car) talk 'em down. ALOT. Start pointing our crap that needs replacing, and pretty much bad mouth it as if u were a FORD lover. i picked mine up for $9000 with only 40k on it...sweet old lady.. i'll never know what a 70 year old hag was doing with a Z but... eh.

looks like everyone has got the major stuff covered. just treat it like any other car. just cause it's a sports car doesnt change the fact that you need to listen for things.

as for the guages. the only thing with that is the temp guage. 98 was the last year for a FULLY functioning temp guage. after that they switched to a dummy guage. it will read the same temp..aprox 200...anywhere from 160 to 220 deg.

i would do a search for how to check it the engine is the LS6 block. this only pertains to the 01/02 cars i think. and not that it is anything real special. but it's something nice to know. just don't tell the owner if it turns out that it actually DOES have one

Yeah, as others have said, be patient. For some reason I will never understand people are always selling these cars. I waited for about 6 months, looked at a bunch of cars that were either high mileage, ragged out, or otherwise not what I wanted, but by being patient I found the exact car I wanted. Like Ghost's I got every option I want (t-tops leather M6) but no traction control. Just be patient, and when you find the car you want go after it. Negotiate. Enjoy the fact that you will now own the most awesome car ever.

Another thing to watch (This is in light of a past post). Make sure if you are supposed to have an LS6 intake, that you still do.

hahahaha... I guess if the previous owner(s) removed the LS6 intake RUN!!! and don't look back.

Good luck finding a car. I spent over a year off and on looking for a used fbody.
