New ls1 owner

Just purchased a 1999 SS camaro with 17k miles on it! Paid 12k. I have just a couple of questions.

1. How do I find out what number it is? Did they stop putting the little plates on the dash boards of the SS's?

2. The exhaust has the split tips on it. Is this the optional exhaust?

3. What cat back offers the greatest performance gains?

4. It is an M6, will cat back, lid, and sticky tires get me into the 12's?

That is all I can think of at the moment.

P.S. It looks sweet sitting next to my '67 400 Firebird!

Congrats on the new car!!!

1. Dunno - try SLP though...
2. Dunno.
3. They'll all be minimal over the SS exhaust I think. It mostly comes down to personal preference - of the sound.
4. With a good driver, you should be close to 12s with those, yes.

Again, congrats!

Re: New ls1 owner

well I can answer a few questions...
First the split tip exhaust is an option..SLP option for SS'
secong a lid, catback, and stick tires (ie. Nitto/BFG/ or MT Radials) will NOT get you to the 12's unless you're a hell of a shifter...but it is possible to hit a 12.99. Depends on track conditions and air conditions.

Good Luck
Chris

wow...good price on a nice low mileage car.

if i were you i would install a cutout on the SS exhaust and be done with it. the lid is a good idea, as are good tires.

if you have the factory option Hurst shifter, get a short stick. and if you don't...get a new shifter. the shorter more positive throws will greatly increase your shifts. a shift light helps too, to stay more consistent specially since our tachs SUCK.

Re: New ls1 owner

Would a new shifter come with a short stick? or should i get both?

How much do the cutout's leak? do they seal pretty well or can you hear a little exhaust leak? I hate exhaust leaks more than anything.

it all depends on how it's put on
if it's welded, there shouldnt be an exhaust leak at all, if just clamped on, just tighten to get rid of leaks
forewarning though, cutouts are LOUD

and do you think you need a lid?
since the ss has the hood scoop and all, i thought the gains were similar to that of a lid (they were on 96-97 ss's i know, but i'm unclear on the newer ones)

edit: welcome to the board

A lid will help no matter what, as will the SLP Flopac..or similar. A cutout could leak especially if it's an electric, they have a tendancy to leak after time, or so my experience is, and depending on the tune it could hurt the car (I know an all motor Z, M6 with a 12 bolt, full exhaust, that loses HP with the cutouts open). Aside from that a shift light, and short throw (B&M comes with the stick) would help enormousely. Then look into a few bolt ons...underdrive...headers maybe, and you could be there no problem. The previous stated Z runs 12.6 on motor alone, launching at 4500. It also has a centerforce, QA1 susp., LCA's, panhard, slicks, and a ported T/B as well as the Z06 MAF. That's about it. Exhaust is SLP LT's, Y-Pipe, and Mufflex 3.5" cat-back. Pretty basic stuff, and the kid can't drive for the life of him!!! Pretty fool proof if you ask me.

Chris

BTW the convert we built had a 6-point bar, slicks, hookers, Mufflex y and 4" catback, SLP FLopac and Lid, and a 150shot from NX. Car has run a best of 11.8 and he wants to go faster....
