new engine

I was wanting to get a LS2/LS7. Would be my dream!! The Ls2 = 402 and the LS7=427cu in? LS7 is 600rwhp stock? what about the LS2?
Where could I get a good crate engine?
I want it to be computer controlled if at all possible, so I can tune it perfectly.
I think my best/cheapest option is to just get a z28/SS out of a wrecking yard and swap it into my car. Whats the potential of building a ls1? I know Keith / Magnus made a 10 second 1/4 time with tires and tuning? If I got a Ls1 I would want to boost it.
Thanks

I have a question for you, what kind of drugs are you on??
Go do some more reading and research. All of your numbers are bogus.

Re: new engine

hm...

the LS2 isn't neccessarily a 402ci engine. i think the ones that come in the new GTO and Vette are 6.0L, which is in the 360ci range. alot of aftermarket companies are offering LS2 based engines that are bored/stroked to 402ci.

the crate LS7 is 500hp, not 600...although it's possible it's underrated, but i haven't heard anyting either way.

with an lsx based engine why would you do anything BUT computer controlled? you'll have a hard time doing it any other way, especially since it has no distributer.

you can take a stock LS1 and do a simple heads/cam swap and make an easy 500hp at the crank. with a good tune and a proper car setup it will be very streetable. and if you run the 6spd and reasonable gears you could easily maintain 20+mpg on the highway.

i'm running bolt ons with a decent size cam, stock heads and it's putting out 400rwhp. on stock gears i'm getting 24-25mpg on the highway, and about 18-19mpg in the semi-city driving i do around home.

but seriously....do some more reading...you need it.

read the first 10 or 15 pages of this forum...then come ask questions

Re: new engine

Teke covered pretty much everything I wanted to say.

Just to clarify, LS7 is 500 crank horsepower; we're talking about 400-450 at the rear wheels depending on drivetrain. On a full-weight F-body, that's enough power to get into the 11's without a lot of trouble. I imagine that a perfect setup with slicks could break into the 10's.

If you want an LSx-based F-body, your best bet is to buy one. You can get a '98 Z28 for under $10,000. In the long run, it will save you tons of time, tons of headache, and tons of money.

A 9-second DD with good gas mileage? Doable, but not easy. I hope you have a nice budget and a lot of time on your hands.

Re: new engine

best way i can think of to get a 9 sec DD is to run a badass engine that puts you solidly into the low 11s...

then run a badass shot of n2o.

Or some positive manifold pressure.

Nah.

Start with an LS2 w/ DOD. Heads, cam, supercharger, and a handful of supporting mods.

DOD is displacement on demand; GM is now calling it Active Fuel Management (AFM). V8 engines can run on four cylinders for improved fuel economy when cruising.

Positive manifold pressure is a euphemism for forced induction; i.e. turbocharger or supercharger.

Vette, GTO, and SSR (that weird truck thing that almost nobody likes) have the LS2 in the '05 and up models. That's all, I think.

Oh, the silver Camaro Concept is supposed to have an LS2.

Re: new engine

sorry, I knew all that
I think if the 2008 Colorado ever comes out it might have an LS2.
the question is, would a ssr or colorado truck engine with its 4L70-E tranny work
as a "race car"

I'd bet on the 5.3 in the Colorado. I don't know the engine code, but LS4 is the FWD variant (found in Impala SS and others).

No, I wouldn't use a truck tranny in your car. BTW, I believe it's a 4L80E. I haven't heard of a 4L70E.
