New 160 Thermostat problem?

I just got my new slp thermostat from ws6parts.com and installed it, my deal is that crusing down the road, not idling im still getting the same temp reading as i did with the stock unit? Is this supposed to happen? I thought that the cooler thermostat was supposed to drop the running temp down? I follwed the steps perfectly from install university regarding filling the radiator. Thanks Guys

Nope.

Your fans bring down the temperature. The high setting is set to come on somewhere around 227* F on a stock car.

read closer kraest

"my deal is that crusing down the road, not idling"

the temp guages on the 99+ ls1 cars is basically a dummy guage. it reads the same temp over a 30-40degree range.

so you won't see the change in actual coolant temp displayed on the guage. but it's there.

do a search for temp guage and i'm sure you'll see dozens of references to this issue.
the 98s came with a "working" guage, but GM had so many complaints on all the fluctuations in the temp...that they dummied it up.

Actually, that's the first fan. The 2nd one doesn't come on until coolant temps hit 233*F.

there isnt anything wrong with your thermostat, its your fans. To completly get the full potential of your thermostat you need to get you fans reprogrammed to come on at a lower temp. I put in a 160* thermostat, and the same thing happened, so i had my fans reprogrammed to come on at 172* for low speed and 178* for highspeed. my car doesnt get as hot as it used to and the high speed fan hardly comes on at all, except for sitting in traffic.

just get your fans reprogrammed to come on at lower temps and you will run cooler

wow...those are really low fan settings!!!

driving around in average south florida heat i only see about 175 on the coolant temp (according to the scanner). so having fans set at 172 would mean mine would be on almost 100% of the time...for no reason

most tuners will program for 185 on...180 off when using a 160 stat

Yeah, I usually drop 40* off of the stock fan settings for people running a 160* stat. That puts them at 186* and 193* for the low and high fans.

yeah, i know its low, but my fans are hardly ever on, so it hasnt become a problem yet, when it gets hotter out, which it will in acouple of months, i might have to have the fans raised to have them come on at higher temps
