Need help.. massive detonation and pinging..
alright guys we just had our local dyno day yesterday..
my car is a lid only 2001 Z/28 w/36,000 miles on it..
so the other day im driving along and punch it and notice a wierd pinging noise coming from my engine, i recognize it as detonation and let off and drive it kindly the rest of the day..
next day rolls around and i punch it again to see if i have detonation still... NONE.. no pings just solid acceleration.
so im heading down to dyno day and it seems to be running fine.. finally get on the dyno and run it. AS SOON as i slam WOT on the dyno it starts pinging to all hell.. the guy said it is the worst detonation he has ever heard and wont even let me do another pull.. i still put down 300 RWHP and 321RWTQ on a lid only A4 01 Z.
i dont understand why im pinging?? i just replaced the spark plugs the day before (replaced them cause i heard the pinging the day before and was trying to fix the problem). spark plugs were NGK TR6's gapped at .045 (stock is .060)
car recieves nothing but premium gas at all times, which is 91 octane here.
Also, my buddies that were watching me dyno said it was also quite wierd because while i was dynoing once the pinging started my car never pulled timing.. just kept on pinging and didnt stop.
could this be a knock sensor?? im not getting any codes or SES light EVER, never have since i have owned it.
im hoping this is an easy fix as im giving up on fbodies at this point... currenty pricing out vettes and a beautiful 03 cobra so that i dont have to deal with engine problems...
i dont want to pay money to get things working like they should be working.. its a 2001, it should run perfect for many years to come.. i want my money to go into modifications that make it better.. not bandage problems.. i refuse to pay 500 bucks to take it to gm to fix, or have it tuned for another 500 bux.. if its an easy fix great ill do it myself.. if its pricey then ill just sell it.

Did you get any antiseize on the plugs when you changed them?
Also doesn't seem right that you put 300 to the wheels with a lid only and were detonating, if you were the computer would be pulling a lot of timing and there's no way the car would have made near that power. Are you sure it's detonation and not something else?

no i did not use anti seize when i changed them.. how would that make a difference? also i have dyno charts to prove the 300 to the wheels and lots of witnesses, gas was 91 octane which is all i ever put into it, and thats the problem... it seemed like the computer never pulled any timing?? which would make me tend to believe its a knock sensor or something along those lines thats wrong on top of whatever is making it ping in the first place?

another thing i should note is i bought this car used thinking it was stock... i dunno if it is cause i kill bolt on LS1's all the time.. even ones with LS6 intake like i have..
i thought it was stock but the other day i pulled off the lid again and realized my MAF was descreened... which led me to wonder if maybe it has something else?? like hypertech or something

Mine made 298 hp at 4800 rpm before they shut it down from detonation, so 300 is very possible. I don't have the LS6 intake either.
Since your MAF is descreened, I'd check that out. That was the cause of my problems.

yours had the same problem??? how did your narrow it down to your MAF??? was it giving false readings and leaning out your engine too much or what??

i will admit my HP numbers are a bit higher than i expected especially with detonation... but who knows... greed you also have a 6 speed so your numbers should have been considerably higher than mine... not to mention the elevation here sucks ***...

The shop that dynoed me suggested it was the MAF. There were no codes.
I was running a ported one, and still had my stock, so I dropped it in and it solved the problem.
If you have any friends that'll loan you one, I'd give it a try.
My problem now is that I'm a bit rich with headers, etc.

I have to correct myself, I only made 292.9 by 4800 RPM. Thats still way below redline. The torque curve hadn't even peaked yet and it still made 314.2 lb/ft. The pull before it made 315.3 lb/ft and they shut it down a little earlier.
I was still happy because there was a Mach 1 guy that was talking smack and only dynoed in the 180s on a complete pull.

wow wierd.. my peak HP and torque were at like 3500 RPM's, car was detonating all the way through the RPM's as soon as i laid into WOT...

Sounds like you have a hard running sled! I've seen a few get 315.

My detonation was noticable at higher RPM, but it was lean everywhere.

interesting read but i dont think that it really applies to whats up with me, his car was pulling timing when he didnt want it to.. mine is actually detonating
