Talking My LS1 is alive!!!! **Last night's track times inside!**

Well, after last year's best run of 14.008 @ 102.99, I thought I had the slowest LS1 out there. That was even after installing the new lid and K&N.

LAST NIGHT, I decided to drive to Cayuga.......................well worth it!!!!

On my first run, I ran 13.906 @ 104, so I was pretty happy to see a 13 !!! THEN, a couple runs later (once I got the launch figured out a little better) I ran a time that blew me away.........

..............13.434 @ 105.80 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! All I have done to the car besides the lid and filter is the Hypertech tuning, so I don't know what kind of difference it made, but I also have the shift firmness set to 100%, and I increased the shift points by a couple MPH. The only other difference compared to last year is that the temperature was cooler last night, vs hot and humid last year.

So need-less-to-say, I'm sofa king happy!!!!!

Now I can't wait to put the 3.73's in!!! I was hoping for ~13.5's, now I'm going to be chasing 12's!!!!!!!!!!

(BTW: I've got the time slip posted at the bottom of this page).

My very first run was a 14 and I was dissappointed. But then changed rpms I launched at and ran a 13.5, but I am sure a 13.1 is not out of the question. I just added lower control arms and sub frame connectors, so it should help with the hooking up. I so far have only run 3 runs, so a few more and may even break into 12's(I only have the 2:73's) and a A4. The track I went to is in the hills so I am not sure if the times are corrected. It's all about getting traction and finding the perfect rpms to launch at. Also, I had my best time shifting the A4 myself.

Capn,

Do you have any dyno numbers? - just curious. I got my Z around the same time and got pretty good numbers but haven't made it to the track yet.

Nice runs Capn Pete.

I'll bet anything that the reason why you ran faster this time was that you're more used to your car and it's broken in.

How did you launch? Did you nail it and spin your tires or ease into it?

The reason why I ask is because I've been practicing launches on this long, desolete road and they seem to be going pretty well, but I'm not sure if it's the proper way to launch. What I been doing from the stop is easing into it real fast and then going to about 3,500 RPM and I'm at 70 MPH in no time. I get a little wheelspin like right after I launch, then I immedialtely hook up and take off. I leave the ASR on too, should it be turned off at the track? I leave it on because I don't want to roast my new tires.

So what's the better way to launch, the way I'm doing it, or just flat out nailing the gas?

Well assuming you have a A4 with 3.23s which your sig says, 13s should be easy. My bone stock 98 A4 with 3.23s ran a 13.5 at 101 first time I ever went to the track and that was a 92 degrees day.

Thanks for the good words guys!

Well, I still don't know what the hell was going on with the 14's before?! But at least they're a thing of the past now!

I don't think I did anything different in my launch than I ever have before. In fact, my best 60' time (on the 13.4 run) was only 2.152, and last year I ran 2.101 in the 60' on my 14.008 run?! So I dunno?!?!?

As a rule, I'll pre-load the car once I'm staged to around ~1200 - 1500 rpm, and launch on the last yellow (or try!) although my r/t's were 2 tenths slow on average (.700's for 5 out of 6 runs).

JaysZ: I don't have any dyno numbers yet, but I work close to Agostino's (A.R.E.) and they've got a dyno, so one day I'm going to go for a couple runs there I think. I'm not going to get my hopes up for anything, but 300+ HP at the wheels would be sweet!

Well, now it's time to start thinking about TRACTION..............once I get those 3.73's put in, traction will be the only thing stopping me from hitting 12's!

Well Congrats Capn Pete.. Now I need to find a track in my area and see what kind of 1/4 mile ETs I can get out of my car...

As for being ran 14's the last couple of times you ran it could be that your engine was not broken in... I have heard that even w/ 10 - 20,000 miles, that the LS1 is not even fully broken in untill around 32 - 37,000.... Don't know if this is true... But it is a possibility... Also depends on your 60' times and weather could have been holding your car back as well.. Well good luck with 12s though..

Congrats again...

based on my estimated hp and me and my cars weight, I am figureing that the absolute fastest I can go stock is about 13.2.

I will try to see that number then I will try for a bit faster with a lid then I will do the traction mods..

I am thinking your times improved because the conditions were better. Warm wet air doesnt make power.. ever... hehe best to have cold dry air.. so that may be where alot of your time came from. Did you run another back to back? just wondering.

I agree...........I think the cooler temps and less humidity had an effect --- how much? who knows?! --- but I don't think that ~90 degree weather, and extreme humidity helped last year?!

About the back-to-back runs, YES, I ran 6 times on Friday, and 4 out of 6 runs were in the 13.4 to 13.6 range...........to be exact:
  • 13.906 @ 104.02 - 2.349 60'..........1st run, bad launch
  • 14.195 @ 104.12 - 2.386 60'..........2nd run, even worse launch!
  • 13.537 @ 105.05 - 2.237 60'..........3rd run
  • 13.607 @ 105.00 - 2.176 60'..........4th run
  • 13.434 @ 105.80 - 2.152 60'..........5th run **record**
  • 13.667 @ 104.35 - 2.204 60'..........6th run
