Is my clutch the problem?

If I try to put my car in gear after I start it, I can push the clutch in for at least 2 seconds and then go into 2nd or 1st and it will grind some. I was thinking maybe it could have something to do with it being so cold outside maybe. Also, after I switched to the Pro 5.0 shifter, if i do a shift into 5th that isnt a little slow, it will grind there too. I know its not me because I watched myself closely to make sure that I had the clutch all of the way in. I didnt have this problem in 5th until I changed the shifter, and even then I didnt notice it for a couple of weeks, I guess it wasnt doing it immediately afterwards. The problems with 1st and 2nd seemed to have started when it got cold. Any suggestions on what my problem is?

Well if the only thing changed is the shifter and everything worked fine before that, then I think you have your answer. You might want to try backing out your stop bolts to the point where they bearly make contact before being stopped by the tranny. Test drive it(with the center console out) for a little bit. Not just up and down the street, but for a good drive and if you can stomach the center console out for a whole day that would help. Temperature can effect the travel path of the shifter. If backing out your stop bolts fixes the problem then you can now slowly move them up so they make contact with the stick. Find the spot where the shifter no longer smoothly shifts and then back the stop bolt out a few turns and you're set.

If the stop bolts don't help you might want to consider the clutch hydrolics. They tend to act up in really cold weather.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Today I downshifted to 5th after having the clutch in for 2-3 seconds and I grinded pretty good. 5th seems to be my problem gear once the car is warmed up and everthing. 1 and 2 dont seem to be problems once the car is warmed up.

For some reason my old '97 Z28 6 speed would always grind into 2nd when it was really cold out......but once the car warmed up it was fine. However I did need the tranny fluid replaced so maybe you should check and make sure its not burnt or anything. Good luck.
