My 80 TA vs My 99 TA
My 80 TA vs My 99 TA
OK guys I have a 1980 Trans Am originally had the 4.9 Turbo but my dream was to have a Big Block 455 and this summer my dream will finally come true. I also have a 99 with the LS1 of course. I think the 99 will still blow the 80 away but my friend wants to bet me $100.00 him in the 80 and me in the 99 that he will beat me in the 80. Before either one of run either one of the cars. What do you guys think should I go for that? Oh yeah we are running at the 1/4 mile track.
Here's what the 80 has
455 Big Block bored 30 over
Holley High Performance Fuel Pump
650 CFM Carter Competition
Edlebrock Performer RPM intake
Speed Pro Aluminum Pistons
Edlebrock Aluminum Heads with a 480 lift
Comp Dual pattern cam 458/472 ( I think) 292 duration (again I think)
Turbo 400 Tranny with B&M Stage 3 Street/Strip Shift Kit
2400 Stall
Street Tires 275/60/R15
Very High gears they are the stock gears so I am not sure I just know from driving it has all top end.
Hooker Headers Dualed off with 12 inch glass packs with the pipes run underneath the doors
Here what the 99 will have by that time
K&N FIPK
SLP Loudmouth
SLP Longtube Headers w/ off-road pipes
3.73 Gears
2800 Stall Converter
160 degree thermostat
Holley LS6 Intake
NGK TR6 Plugs
B&M Tranny Cooler
TNT F2 100 Shot Wet Nitrous Kit (I will not be using this in the race)
Nitto 555r's 245/50/R16

tru, that's gonna be a good race, but i think if you put the 455 in there... he might getcha
you should spray though when you guys go at it... it would even out the race a little, lol
its a tough call to make... but i got my money on the '80 w/ the 455 big block. how much horse power is that baby pushing? if it's not as good as a number as i think it is, i'll probably change my mind and go w/ the ls1, lol

your t/a probably is still running 2:73 gears or 3.08's so i say it is gonna be a very close one! I had a 1980 301 t/a and it had 2:73's so you probably have the same. i am betting on the ls1 but put some 4:10's and some sticky tires on the t/a and the ls1 should loose buy a half second.
lol i think i read the post wrong from the begining.....
the 99 will take the 80 as is right now, w/ juice... but put the 455 in the 80 and thats a whole different story.
there... now i dont look like an idiot for thinking the 455 was already in the 80, lol

say what? the ls1 isn't useing the juice and the 455 is in the 80? easy on the crack pipe buddy!
LOL
he said he's not spraying in the LS1, so i said that if he's not spraying, he'd still be able to beat the 4.9 turbo T/A in the 99 T/A.
then i also said that once he puts the 455 in the 1980 T/A, he'd beat the 99 LS1 T/A.
or does he already have the 455 in the '80 T/A already? he says he has it in his specs of the car, but yet he said he'll be getting it this summer... w/e, i've haven't slept in a while so i guess it's getting to me and my eyes, lol

You'll be lucky to get that 80' TA out of the 14's. The 99' is going to walk it.....without the nitrous.
The 99', with the mods he has listed that he's going to do, if he does them, and can get the car to hook, will run mid 12's all day long.
The 80' on the other hand weighs a ton, has small heads, an even smaller cam for a big block, small carburetor, crappy gears, small convertor, and street tires.
Trust me, it would be ugly!

I kind of agree with UnbeleiveablLS1. You cam seems quite small to me, and so do your heads. If you're going to keep the heads at least port them out a good bit. If you're doing that much work to the car, get some gears for it! Some 3.73s would benefit that thing nicely. Glasspacks, ugh. Don't use glasspacks. That's all I have to say about that.
You're '99 will be easily into the 12s without the spray. You're 455, the way it sits now (or planned), will be lucky to see high 13s imo. And that's with traction. Get some tires for the '80 and definatly a new carb. Better heads/cam if possible.

Pics and Vid
Hey thanks for all the input. Since the race isen't going to happen for a while. (Track dosen't open till april) I will try to get some pics to post. I will also try to get a video camera to tape the race. As far as clearing up the motor confussion, when I bought it it had the 403 olds. Since I have had it, it never had the 4.9 that it came with stock. I decided to get the 455, got it put in summer of 2000 but a month after I got it put in a rod started knocking. So I took the motor out and have been rebuilding it since then. Besides the heads getting redone and a new cam the motor is pretty much the same as it was when I first put it in expect the rebuild parts. I have drove both of them and I still think the 99 with blow the 80 out of the water even without the nitrous but it also wasen't runing real well because it had a flat cam so we will see in April. Will get pics when I get the motor back in (probably a couple month's away) and will also try to get some pics of the 99 for you guys and a vid camera for the race. Sorry for the long request and thanks for the reply's
