Most economical way to make 400hp
Most economical way to make 400hp
Hi all, i would like to get theLS6 conversion kit for my SS, but i am worried about the manifold issue. Massachusetts has Emissions and i want to pass...lol i have had issues with past cars and it was such a pain to get them to pass the sniffer. So i am prob gunna have to keep the stock manifold for fear that the ls6 intake will make me fail due to no egr and the SES light. I dont want to turn my car into a mess of cut hoses and wires either. So is there anyother way to get 405hp. Will the LS6 heads bolt up too the 98 manifold i have? If not what other rout can i go to get 400hp. I cant really do headers because of emissions, so i was basically thinking heads/reliable and streetable cam and SSRA and SLP loudmouth.
Mods for right now are just SLP lid with k&n filter, SLP "y" pipe and flowmaster muffler.
Also giggle gas is not an option

The Cam and heads idea is pretty solid. That should get you pretty close to 400 RWHP by itself.

you can get a full ls6 conversion and you will pass in fact with most cams you will pass cause mass does only a obd2 ttest on our cars so as long as you get it tuned with a good ls1 guy you will pass pm Slowhawk he does some awesome ls1edit work in mass and eastside performance does some great work also but they are in ct.

yes some stations do just plug u in to there smog computer and see if you have any trouble codes but the one i went to its was broken so it stuck me on the sniffer. not all stations have the obdII system because i believe other car manufactorers dont use the same type of programing so it makes it difficult to read. Plus not all have the smog plug most just stick you on the sniffer. But ne whoo, so LS6 heads do bolt up. What type of valve covers will i need? LS6 ones? the reason why i was concindering the LS6 kit is because, its made by gm/slp the ls6 can pass the sniffer, LS6 sounds cool, and i want to still have a failry good mpg with a streetable cam and i dont want to have to do alot of tuneing.
As i stated in the topic what is the most economical way to reach 400hp?
Lets say that i got a SLP Lid, SSRA, SLP Y pipe, SLP loudmouth or slp catback bring me too? i really dont want to do headers for fear of the sniffer.
I always thought that the LS6 intake that SLP made has the EGR and won't make the SES light go on. Someone correct me if I am wrong, though.
Is this true? Can anyone verify this?
Also sorry if i sound like an ***, but i am just on a budget and trying to keep things from getting too expensive. I really dont know too much about cam selection for this car. Like what is good lift and lobe seperation for a ls1? but the deal with cams is, that u need headers. I wish i could cut out the Cats and Manifolds but unfortunately i need them to pass emissions.
With the lid, SSRA, y pipe and loudmouth that should put me at about 345 ne way right?
Thanks for the input guys i really appreciate it.

Yes, SLPs conversion LS6 intake has provisions for EGR.
And you guys need to pay attention to terminology.
He's asking how to get 405 crank hp like a Z06 and some are telling him that he can't get 405 rear wheel hp and satisfy smog. Well DUH!!!!
As stated $2000 for an LS6 heads and cam and the small gains is not economical.
On a 98 or 99 to stay smog legal and make a little more power I'd go with Hooker shorties, LS6 intake with EGR, ported throttle body, pullies, SSRA, and a small cam ( talk to the vendors and see what they have that will pass emissions).
These mods should be good for way more than the 400 crank hp that you are looking for and with tuning should drive like stock and pass tech.

looking at your sig did you work at uhaul in taunton? if so we have met my buddy with his t/a was renting a trailor and i had the nbm SS. if you got all the bolt ons headers intake catback pulley... you would put down about 340 345 rwhp wich is where 405 hp crank give or take a few.. put a nice tr 224 cam in there and you will have about 380 rwhp with a good tune and you will be above where you want to be and pass the sniffer easily. Don aka slowhawk does a pretty excelent tune and lives right near taunton and can hook you up on a dyno and tune so he can tune your a/f so it will pass emmisions. pm maybe sometime we can meet up and talk cars unfortunately my rear is blown right now so i am waiting for a 12 bolt wich you will need soon enough if you like to drive hard

I am brand new to the F-body world and don't know much about my car or cars in general... can you explain, if you don't mind, or show me where I can learn about each of the items you listed... the hooker shorties? LS6 intake? is that the manifold? how do I get the throttle body ported? is that expensive? what kind of pullies to get? and what about the small cam? I would love to put some time and money into my car and make it fast as hell.. well faster than it is I guess... the only "mod" I have on it right now is the SLP installed dual dual, which I am guessing puts me at about 330 crank... thanks for help..

there are several sponsors that port TB's check out thunder racing and janzer and bauer they can port and powdercoat your TB usually for like 200 bucks...once you get their TB send them yours back and youll get a credit off for the core charge. Or do it yourself with a dremel or air grinder. Its mainly a crank pulley they are talking about usually worth a few hp at the wheels for like 100 bucks you can get asp and i think there are a couple of others out there do a search and you shall see. A small cam is a relative term...for me a small cam for an ls1 is anything with = to or less than 224 duration both intake and exhaust and less than .550 lift...thats about 80% of the cams out there though
remember bigger isnt always better though and youll have to care for the valvetrain more often with a larger cam.lata

Nope i dont work at uHaul, i am a security guard at the natick mall.
Yeah, i guess the ls6 package is kinda a waste hunh? Well, i will see what else is out there then
Yeah i will def pm ya ur not too far away from me..it would be nice to get to know some local board members.
Ok, so LS6 intake, throttlebody, i saw a hotcam package for LS-1's in summit is that anygood or is that gunna keep me from passing the sniffer? Also, my car is an M6 so i dont need a stall converter. I saw an old hot rod issue and it was how to get 400rwhp with ur ls1 and it said to use longtubes but barein mind hotrod doesnt have to deal with mass state emissions and our emissions are every 2 years.
In teh hot rod mag, it says that the car they worked on already had hooker long tubes and an aftermarket lid and a larger MAF sensor. Now they ported the stock heads, added a new balancer, added a chip and a custome cam they made and they got 403 rwhp. Also i was reading a hot rod mag from march 2003 with the new 05 mustang on the cover and they have a section on better breathing. They tested a K&N FIPK on a 2000 SS and found these results. Dyno before came at 286hp then after it came to 303 hp with the kit
I always thought a lid was just as good as this kit but i guess i am wrong. Will a SSRA work with this kit? Prob not seeing how it doesnt use the airbox.
