Thumbs up Moser 12 bolt finally in!

After tedious searching for a u-joint that fit (see my post in the lounge on that matter) the rear-end is finally on my car

Lotsa ppl complain about the whine noise, but it's not that bad. Maybe I got a good one, or maybe it's cause it's not broken in yet or hasn't been launched on, dunno. When you get to 60mph, you can barely hear a noise, it gets louder all the way up to 70, and then after 70 it starts to go away, by 80 it's gone. I haven't gotten the car past 80 yet. It doesn't sound like a whine at all though. If you've ever done that thing where you cup your hands and blow into your thumbs and it makes that noise that sounds like a train whistle, it's kinda like that, only deeper. To really hear it you gotta let off the gas a lil, cuz under load the cutout's so loud you can't hear it unless you're TRYING to. With the radio up it's non-existant

Anyways, lookin forward to seein if the new gears can gimme .1 at the track on Friday! Thanks to everyone that helped me out w/ all my questions!

Hey GrdLock did you buy the rear end complete (with ringm pinion and axles already installed) ?? Or did you have to install Ring and Pinion along with Carrier ??

Well if you are hearing a whining noise and this is to anyone who has a 12 bolt under their F-bodys.. Take it to a mechanic that has the ability to set up The Ring and Pinion.. For one, the only time a Rear End will whine is if the Pinion Depth or Backlash is not set to correct specs.. I have seen what happens to rear ends if they are not set up and it can cause problems like breaking Carrier and or Ring and Pinion... I am positive that it should not have whine noise or anything like that...

This is just my opinion though..

stickshift: I would buy I don't wanna lose my post count lol.

I paid approx $2200 for it, and got a performance shop to install it. I WAS gonna do it myself, but as some may know my mom got her usual fear of me working under jack stands so she volunteered to pay for it

dmnall: It came with the entire differential assembled. The axles aren't put on it yet, cause you have to take your brake backing plates off your existing axle and have them pressed over the bearing before putting the axles on. That's the only assembly step you have to do.

As for the whining, I've never heard of a single person with a 12 bolt that doesn't hear SOME noise. Even the ones who have gotten their gears reset and all, most still hear some noise. It's normal w/ a 12 bolt.

I'll get to the heads/cam area in a few months. I outta have this 12 bolt and rims paid off fairly soon, then it's time for a cam, then heads!

Yeah, and your decision WILL BE MADE FOR YOU on the 12 bolt the 1st time out to the track......dump clutch, stop, get out and pick up pieces of POS 10 bolt.

Well actually it is kind of weird to hear that newer 12 bolts makes a whining noise.. I have a 68 12 Bolt (GM Truck) and GM truck 74 12 Bolt and no whining noise at all... I have even ridden in First Gen and 2nd Gen F bodys w/ no noises and even a couple of Malibus the same.. I wonder if it is something to do with the Moser 12 bolt ?? I guess I have to read into it more though..

It's not just because it's a "12 bolt". It's mainly due to the type of high strength gears that Moser and Strange both use. The gears have a high nickel content that increases strength, but at the expense of added noise. Plus, there is more noise associated with the higher ratio's that most people run (3.73's, 4.11's).

Yeah, but what fun is it to have gobs of HP when all you do is spin the tires thru every gear???

Personally, I want to use every pony that my car puts out.

Well when I thought maybe because it was the Moser itself is probably because maybe their case is a little different from GMs 12 Bolt... Well The Gears are probably what are causing the noise and not the gear ratio... Thanks for the Info on the gears...
