mechanic bad mouths cutout

so i went down to the local exhaust shop 2 talk bout gettin my cut out put in no prob doin it but he started bad mouthin it sayin its a waste of money, i'm not gonna get any performance gains from it if anything it will be very little. Then he told me if I want a car with real power get a 69' Camaro like him. cause only big mods like heads/cam will make this car more powerful than stock cause right now you have a low 14 sec car. I just smiled and said ok. I hope it doesn't rain friday so I can go to the track hopefully pull out somethin in the 13 then go bak n see wut he says

he has no experience with the ls1 if he says you have a low 14 sec car. I wouldn't give him the honor of working on your car if he doesn't appreciate it. lets see what he would do at a road course against yours.

on a side note you probably get twice as good gas mileage.

I've been in many situations like that. These guys see me as a kid (well, I'm 18), with a car and they think I don't know anything. I've shutup a few guys who think they know what they're talking about.

Now, I just don't deal with it anymore. I walk into a place and tell them what I need done (only when I can't do it myself, mainly welding and heavy duty stuff like that). If they tell me I'm wrong or it can't be done, I simply walk out. They'll always say, "well ok, I'll do it" but I just tell them it's too late and I'll take it down the street.

I had a 70 SS that ran 12.90, but it got 10 mpg. I sold it because it couldn't compete w/LS1's w/out getting horrible milage. Now I have a 00 SS. The guy is either afraid of technology or is stuck in the 60s him self. Last time I checked a stock LS1 f-body is a solid 13 sec car w/a good driver. The guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Old school drag racers run open headers, whats the diff between that and cut outs?

I was looking in the classic section and a guy has a numbers matching 69 w/ a 350. It is rated at 255hp. Compare that to the LS1 output. lol Not to mention that is low 15 sec to high 14 sec range there. I have a friend w/ a 69 vert w/the Edelbrock RPM package heads and all, it isn't all that either. Just mid 13's.

The way I look at it. If someone you're going to pay to do a job for you is going to give you a hard time about your car. Don't use them. There are too many other places that'll weld in a cut out.

Yep, sounds like when I tried to give my local exhaust shop my install of my cutout, right before the stock muffler. He tried to tell me his Flowmaster muffler would give me more HP than the cutout. I asked him if he thought open exhaust was not as good as running through a muffler then why didn't the NHRA dragsters run his Flowmaster junk. I took my business 25 miles from home and found a shop that welded in my SFC's for a good price and no problem with the custom install right before the stock muffler for my QTP Electric cutout.

Well I originally had a flowtech cut out and i did love it at first but once i got the headers on it was way too loud in the car you couldnt even talk to someone. Plus i noticed that the car had a slight bog off the line. Today I had them replace my flowtech with a SLP loudmouth and believe me it sounds so much nicer. Very deep sound at 2000 rpms. Also you can barely hear it in the car. And it seems to have taken car of the bog off the line problem. Going to the track on Wednesday to see if it helps my 60'.

the guy is a morron, unelss he has one of the few ZL1s from 69 or a heavily worked car, he shouldnt talk any trash. It would be different if he just stuck to the cut out, but to say that, i have a short fuse and would have erupted into a yelling match to tell him how it was and is, then taken my cutout to another shop.

I guess he felt threatened or sumthin idk after he asked me wut i have done to it i told him. Lid, Ram Air, and a Flowmaster muffler. Right after that he busted into a story of his 69' runnin in the 9's on juice and how he got kicked out englishtown until he gets proper roll bars and saftey stuff.

13 RWHP gain, all through the powerband, with nothing more than a cutout.

I sold the 70 because it needed a lot of work. It also couldn't compete w/the LS1 and be a dependable, affordable daily driver unless I went to a newer drive train. I had that car since Dec of 91. Just got tired of messing w/ it. Just to give you an idea about the car, I named it Murphy...as in Murphy's Law. I think of all the things that needed work and I don't miss it at all.

What a toker. When I first got the SS, I had two mods, a cheap Whisper lid and a cut-out. She put down 324 hp and 343 lb. ft. tourque like that, on a 1999 model.

Now I've got long tube headers and a cutout after each, and I wouldn't trade the ability to put the caps on and have it quiet as a Cavalier for anything!

Well, the guy sounds like a tool and he must have mucho coin to be pissing off customers.

But, maybe he did see some LS1's running 14's and that is where he based his opinion off of. I personally have seen many LS1's in the 14's@99-101 MPH. I have also seen many in the 13's@ 103-105 also, but like I said, maybe he saw the slower ones?

As far as a cutout, I am still on the fence on that one. I help out at my local dyno shop and a guy that floats around this board showed up with I believe a 99 or 00 SS A4, some mods and a cutout. He made 270 rwhp, 330 rwtq. Sorta low, actually, really low and it sounded, for lack of a better term, weak. So I put some plates and blocked the cutouts best I could and it jumped 25 rwhp and 30 rwtq with the cutouts closed...ouch.

But others seem to have gotten gains....

Guys, I've dynoed my car many times. The two different times that I pulled my cut out cap off I lost horsepower. With just a lid and Super Sucker I lost 2rwhp. I went from 326 to 324. I have since put in a cam and long tube headers. two days ago I dynoed it and the same thing again. 393 to 391 horsepower. i didn't like the sound without headers. with headers it sounds much better having the cap off. If anyone has a stock SS intermediate pipe, I will trade you mine with the FlowTech cutout welded into it.
