Post Magnaflow Muffler - Should I?

Hey all,

Well, I love my 2002 SS. Gawd, I'd take a bullet for it =)

My local exhaust shop told me they have a magnaflow muffler designed exactly for my car, and I've got some questions.

1) Should I? lol

2) Any ideas if it will be TOO LITTLE backpressure if I do this? I hate the choking sound of not having enough, when you come off of the RPMS how it seems to 'choke'.

3) Will it be TOO LOUD? Annoying? Or powerful?

4) Anything performance-wise, gains?

Is the magnaflow muffler worth it?

Just lookin for input =) I love the rumble I have already, but would love more.

You guys kick ***.

I did it. Changed the stock ss muff on my 2002 for the Magnaflow. Looks great with highly polished stainless steel shell. Sounds louder, but is not obnoxiously loud. Note: when you first drive away from the muff shop you will think it is no louder than stock. After a week or two it burns in and gets louder. No problem with drone in the cockpit. HP increase? don't know and couldn't really feel any diff. The muffler is straight through so it is about as low restriction as a full cat back. Don't worry about back pressure, the car runs great with it. Do it, you'll like it (unless you are looking for a really loud exhaust).

Jeff'SS and Verycrazybosnian,

Did you keep your stock exhaust tips when you went with the Magnaflow? I was considering getting one of these mufflers but would like to keep the stock exhaust tips.

Alen,

I might be interested in that muffler. Shoot me an email if you still have it.

I kept the stock tips on mines...no drones, can't really hear it in 5th/6th gear...loud enough for me at least.

The Magnaflow has a more mellow sound to it than the rest of the systems or mufflers out there. I've had 3 different mufflers/systems on my car since I bought it. First a flowmaster which sounds a little hollow on an LS1, then a magnaflow which is mellow, and now a Loudmouth which i love, they dont call it loudmouth for nothing!!! What kinda of sound are u looking for? They are almost all the same peformance wise, but u will get a little more power with a system instead of just a muffler.

I think Magna flow is for me after hearing what you guys been saying. I want more flow than stock without the drone.

I continue to sing the praises of FLOWMASTER. I put one on a few months ago and it is exactly the sound I was after - louder than stock, but not "window rattling" loud. I guess it just depends upon what sound you are trying for.

I've had a Magnaflow catback on my car for about a year and a half now. I couldn't be happier. It's the perfect system if you're looking for something with a deep mellow tone. It also looks great too.

Magnaflow is a great system

I've had my Magnaflow on for about two weeks now. I love the look of the twin polished stainless steel pipes coming out the back. As previously stated by Jeff'SS when you first get it, you will wonder if there is any difference at all. The sound is very mellow and throaty when you keep off the pedal. But once you push it you can hear the pipes roaring.

I did not notice any torque loss due to the lack of back pressure. My SOTP meter tells me I have a gain throughout the torque curve.

However, I did notice annoying loud thumping sound like a drone the other night. I was driving on the highway in 6th. gear at about 70. The RPMs were about 1800. The thud, thud, thud, of the exhaust was particularly loud and annoying. I have noticed this before when the engine is working hard. It was probably due to the engine trying to maintain the relatively slow speed for that high gear. That is the only time I have found it annoying. Otherwise the Magnaflow is a pleasant reminder of what is under the hood.

This must have been specific to the conditions at the time. It was raining and I believe I was on a slight grade. This morning I duplicated the same speed, gear and RPMs. The Magnaflow was actually rather quite with a mild rumbling sound.

It's a great system. I say go for it. It will embelish what you already have

I put a Magnaflow cat back on my SS this weekend and so far I'm very pleased with it. The sound is just what I was looking for, a nice mellow rumble. The 3 1/2" polished stainless pipes look B-A-D a$$. For the price, $395 for an all stainless system, you can't beat it IMHO.
