Maf ???

I have an 02 Z28 M6 in sig and I noticed that my MAF doesn't have a screen on it. Is this normal??? Does it help or hurt?? How can I tell if it's a stock GM v/s Z06, Granatelli Etc...

Thanks

some people de-screen their maf, others don't. you'll get some real strong opinions on this board. i pulled my screen on the dyno, and it was good for a couple horses. it is not there to keep debris out of the intake, that's what the air filter is for. so unless you have a gaping hole in your air filter or lid, you should be ok.

95GRNZ, you out there? he'll present the other side of the argument for you...

Yeah, I am reluctant to remove my MAF screen on the SS because I once found a pine needle caught on the screen of my V6 Camaro. I know that is not supposed to happen and means something is wrong, but still makes me not want to take out the MAF screen. If you do take out the screen I suggest at least making sure there aren't any gaps in the air intake setup.

just because the screen was removed doesn't mean it's not a stock MAF. is there any nameplate on it?

i took the screen out of my maf when i first got my car... alot of power was lost on the low end... car didnt feel strong at all. put the screen back in it was back to normal. mines a 2001 transam. I am highly againest descreening mafs. thoughs screens are there to direct airflow, not proctect it.

Found this on a MAF search on google. Basically says this mod does increase the MAF air flow but this causes the MAF to outflow the TB which equals little or no gain.

dont wast your money on a slp or aftermarket maf. go to ebay or call a place like transamcreations.com and get your self a maf housing with a screen. people have lost power with the slp maf.

conservation of mass. whatever FLOW RATE is present at the MAF is ALSO present at the TB. pressure will drop in the system as the fluid flows, but FLOW RATE is the same all along the system, as long as there's no additional input or output from outside the system.

interesting read, but i have the proof he is looking for that it frees up HP on a basically stock car. i did 3 pulls with the screen in, removed the screen, then did 3 pulls with the screen out. all 3 'screen out' pulls where higher than any 'screen in' pull. HP gain (peak screen out - peak screen in) was 3 RWHP.

also, i have done the calculations on the airflow approach characteristics through our MAFs. at 3000 RPM, the reynolds number of the air flow at the MAF is 1.6x10^5. flow is considered to transition from laminar to turbulent at 2.1x10^3 reynolds number. so the air flow through our MAFs is almost 2 orders of magnitude above laminar flow. anyone who thinks a screen will convert this back to a laminar flow is mistaken. the screen will, in fact, make the flow more turbulent.

i get tired of guys spouting off stuff about laminar and turbulent flow who know nothing about how it is defined, and have not even done the calculations....

i too found something up against my screen it was my stock seal for my stock upper air box. Seeing how only some benifit from this mod, i believe it has something to do with the screen straightening out the airflow. When it is removed it leans out the mixture. Whether descreening helps or not, I will always keep my screen in for the saftey factor.

Uhhh, go to www.gmpartsdirect.com and enter the part number. Or just post the part number. If it is a stock descreened maf, I have a set of ported MAF ends w/ the screen still installed for sale for $35.

I've looked at the stock MAF pics and they look different than mine. Mine doesn't have any of the end pieces. Is that because of the K&N FIPK ?? I didn't install these so i don't know. They were on the car when i bought it.

I know that the bellow between the MAF and the TB is different it's from the FIPK I think.

Thanks.
