Maf ???
Maf ???
I have an 02 Z28 M6 in sig and I noticed that my MAF doesn't have a screen on it. Is this normal??? Does it help or hurt?? How can I tell if it's a stock GM v/s Z06, Granatelli Etc...
Thanks
Thanks
some people de-screen their maf, others don't. you'll get some real strong opinions on this board. i pulled my screen on the dyno, and it was good for a couple horses. it is not there to keep debris out of the intake, that's what the air filter is for. so unless you have a gaping hole in your air filter or lid, you should be ok.
95GRNZ, you out there? he'll present the other side of the argument for you...

i took the screen out of my maf when i first got my car... alot of power was lost on the low end... car didnt feel strong at all. put the screen back in it was back to normal. mines a 2001 transam. I am highly againest descreening mafs. thoughs screens are there to direct airflow, not proctect it.
interesting read, but i have the proof he is looking for that it frees up HP on a basically stock car. i did 3 pulls with the screen in, removed the screen, then did 3 pulls with the screen out. all 3 'screen out' pulls where higher than any 'screen in' pull. HP gain (peak screen out - peak screen in) was 3 RWHP.
also, i have done the calculations on the airflow approach characteristics through our MAFs. at 3000 RPM, the reynolds number of the air flow at the MAF is 1.6x10^5. flow is considered to transition from laminar to turbulent at 2.1x10^3 reynolds number. so the air flow through our MAFs is almost 2 orders of magnitude above laminar flow. anyone who thinks a screen will convert this back to a laminar flow is mistaken. the screen will, in fact, make the flow more turbulent.
i get tired of guys spouting off stuff about laminar and turbulent flow who know nothing about how it is defined, and have not even done the calculations....

i too found something up against my screen it was my stock seal for my stock upper air box. Seeing how only some benifit from this mod, i believe it has something to do with the screen straightening out the airflow. When it is removed it leans out the mixture. Whether descreening helps or not, I will always keep my screen in for the saftey factor.
Uhhh, go to www.gmpartsdirect.com and enter the part number. Or just post the part number. If it is a stock descreened maf, I have a set of ported MAF ends w/ the screen still installed for sale for $35.
I've looked at the stock MAF pics and they look different than mine. Mine doesn't have any of the end pieces. Is that because of the K&N FIPK ?? I didn't install these so i don't know. They were on the car when i bought it.
I know that the bellow between the MAF and the TB is different it's from the FIPK I think.
Thanks.
