LS6 Swap....someone says, why bother...

as fate would have it, my engine needs to come out and new one put in...don't want to go to much into that, but while looking for a good condition LS1, me and my woman have tinkered with the thought of finding a good LS6 engine to throw in there.

a friend of mine had this to say about it:

"Honestly, don't waste your time with an LS6. There is nothing significantly different between them. The LS6 flows better due to cam, heads, and exhaust but for the cost difference, you can modify the LS1 and get far more horsepower and reliability. I know alot of people are also switching to the LQ4 (which is the 6.0lt GenIII small block). The LQ4 has an iron block with aluminum heads which makes it tougher. I am working with a friend on building a twin turbocharged LQ4 derived race engine for his car, who, incendently, recently grenaded his LS1 on the juice but after a few years of abuse.

I didn't see where you mentioned what was actually wrong with the engine. If you do replace it, keep and sell what you can and scrap the rest. Aluminum brings a good price at the scrap yard. Good Luck!"

So whadday think? it didn't sound right to me, so i thought i'd run it past you guys.

I'd say, scour around and see what you can come up with..

call up a few shops and see what they can build for you.

Write it all down and compare..

Personally, I'd probably ask a shop to freshen up a ls1 block and put a healthy, but not too radical cam and worked heads..

although if you so happen to stumble upon an LS6 out of a vette for cheap, why not?

..go to www.corvetteforum.com and look into the difference's between the two...there are many LS6 forum there to check out..BTW, I've done the LS6 convertion on my Z with the heads and cam...I must say the heads are great but I'm not happy with the cam...but if your gonna get a total LS6 conversion with the block and all...do it man...you won't be disappointed

Good luck..

On fbodyv6.com, there is a member named SSpray who swapped an LS6 from a wrecked ZO6 into his 99 WS6. You could ask him about the swap. He said he beat an 03 Cobra, too.
