LS6 conversion

ahh i'm lost- this isnt V6 tech
in all seriousness i plan on doing an LS1 swap next year. now my fellow f buds have turned me on to the LS1/LS6 conversion LS6 conversion
has anybody done this? does anybody have any comments or feedback? i have done almost everything i want to to my poor little V6, so know i think this LS1/LS6 conversion would be a nice step up. i figure it will cost substantially less than a used vette and have the same ***** as one. what else could one want.
the way i see it is:
$5000 for LS1 and tranny and little things to get the engine in the car
$2500 for the conversion
$2500 for a respectable rearend

so for about 10 grand my V6 could turn into a nice little track car.

is this a stupid idea, or should i start saving money now and get this car as soon as possible?

thanks

Are you installing this yourself?
Don't forget to add labor charges.

I'd say go for it!

true, but it wont be the same. this conversion nets you 405 hp to start. cnc the heads and cam it and now you got 500 hp. all with a new top half. 400-500 hp with a V6 vin #.
i have already planned the LS1 swap, this is just an added feature put on before the engine goes in. only thing i have to do different is invest in a 12 bolt. that wasnt neccesarily the case with just a LS1 swap. i was prepared to spend 5-6 grand for the Ls1 swap, but for so little money more i might as well go all the way.
unfortunately i will not be installing it myself, but fortunately my wife makes good money and is supportive. plus my mechanic has already done so much for me + this stuff is fun for him.
i know there can always be problems, just look at all the probs i have had with my ported and cammed V6, but for LS6 power it is definately worth it i think.

I road race in my Z and its just to big a heavy to be competitive with the porches and vettes. If I had 10 g's I would look for a 97 and up vette (when they started with the ls1) the draw back to the vette vs. the (ls6 powered) V6 vin # camaro is the insurence but it would be worth it to me. you could easily make a vette into a beast. just my opinion. but good lick in what you decide.

my insurance on the 6 is murder enough. i pay $312 a month due to accidents and tickets

now another question: just how streetable would this setup be? maintainance and tunning- would they be a problem?

You will generate more hp if you do a heads and cam job on the LS1 instead of doing a LS6 conversion. Good luck.

the conversion is essentially a heads/cam setup. and even those heads can be p/p for more output. it says 500 hp with everything.

Yeah, I'd do a nice Stage II heads 224+ cam package. The LS6 heads are nice for all out power, but not worth the money IMO. Try and get a LS6 block tho... From what I can see it has a better pcv system.

thanks guys, i appreciate the responses. i was just figuring that this conversion was equivalent to a heads/cam package. when i had planned to drop in the LS1 i was already planning to do heads/cam, but then i saw this conversion. i am in no rush and plan to study every aspect of it for the next year. i just so excited wheni saw it to be honest, i will do whatever my mechanic thinks is best.
thanks again for the responses.

There was an ad in the local paper this week, a guy had a LS1 longblock from a 2001 SS for sale. If i remember right, it had 14k on tht motor. He only wanted about $2200 for it!. I dont know anything about it, but if you would be interested, email me and I can get you the phone number. It would be in the Omaha Nebraska area, If anyone else would be interested, email or send me a pm. If I have a few grand sitting around, I would jump on it myself.
