LS1 Water Pump, How difficult is it to replace?

How difficult is it to replace the water pump on an LS1?

Oh and are those electronic water pumps really worth it? I hear they don't last as long?

there is a write up on ls1howto i think...its for an electric unit, but the install should be the same other than wiring.

as for the electric

they flow more at idle AND at top end than the stock pump
they last for something like 3000hrs...which is equivalent of 150K miles at an average speed of 50mph
they free up 10hp or so

problem is they cost ALOT

Yeah, so? Not counting draining and filling of the coolant, its a 15 minute job!

I'm no where close to a mechanic or engine savy for that matter. It took me 1 hour to do it with no problems what so ever.

Just follow the directions in the link above. It really is quite easy, and you'll agree when once finishing the job. Just make sure that the cooling system is completely bled, and if you have any problems, post up!

the mezerie electric unit is somewhere in the $550 price range....all for 10hp and better cooling.

sounds like you just want the reman unit....if you're worried about pulling a TB (just a few bolts and some sensor wire clips) i wouldn't start advising you to do the install and wiring needed for the electric ones.

Neither are really notorious for failure, but the oil pumps are prone to failure more often on the earlier models. A lot of people have gone 200,000 miles on the stock oil pump in the early engines, while some fail under 50,000 miles even. Regardless, the later oil pump designs are better.

The water pumps are like every other water pump on every manufacturers vehicle - the most common problem is a minor leak (at the weep hole) that comes from lots of usage.

Although the water comes from the weep hole, the leak is actually from an internal seal that goes bad. If the weep hole weren't there, the internal bypass would become so great that water would stop flowing and you would have no real indication of what is going on.

Is it an easy job to instal the oil pump yourself or does that take some time?
