LS1 Mods
Re: LS1 Mods
what K&N kit did you buy?
all you need is a $100 lid
and as for exhaust...flowmaster is about the worst.
i would look into magnaflow, tsp rumbler or the LM1 or 2

Best place to the that?
I just got a 98 WS6, with magnaflow.. How much hp the magnaflow cat back gives?
thanks
Re: LS1 Mods
most chambered muffler catbacks give about 13-15 rwhp, and the straight throughs like the loudmouth 1&2 (LM1/2) give a few more hp, but not very noticeable. since they're all about the same in performance, just buy what you think sounds best! hit up a few car shows, or drive around and ask people what exhaust they are running. I prefer the SLP Dual/Dual with !cats (no cats) because its relatively quiet, but still flows excellently! If you like alot of noise, go with a straight through exhaust.
As for your other bang for the buck, HP wise, do all the free mods those combined is about 5-7 hp, run some injector cleaner in a tank, port your stock throttle body, and if you have a manual, get a new shifter, and on either trans, a new set of gears.
Now for enjoyment and traction, i strongly reccomend a set of bigger swaybars and poly bushings. and some people consider subframe connectors to be essential to f-bodies. hit up some of our vendors for good prices on suspension packages, you can get a rear LCA/panhard rod combo for as low as 120 bucks, and install yourself in about 40 min. all those suspension mods will really made your car handle better, and makes driving much more fun. the best suspension mod is a good set of shocks, but konis can be pricey for a full set.
hope that helped.

Re: LS1 Mods
i would honestly say that the best flowing catbacks...LM or TSP rumber...will yield about 13-15hp
some of the more restrictive setups would probably yield 10-13hp.
i do know that dyno runs showed that a cutout on my magnaflow setup (on my 96 LT1) only gained 4hp...so it flows VERY well.
if it's a manual...as ghost said...get a shifter...or at least a short stick. it's something you feel EVERY time you drive the car and i can't imagine driving with the stocker.
i had a factory hurst that i put in my 96 and loved it over stock
when i bought my 99 it had the stocker...i couldn't stand it. i pulled the console apart at a buddy's house before i even got the car home the first time and put the hurst in.
stock shifts from 1st to 2nd are better part of an 8" throw....with the hurst and a short stick...it's 3"
what a difference

Re: LS1 Mods
Skip the K&N and get a lid. Exhaust is a very personal thing with sound being almost as important as performance. I went with a LM, which was great until I put LTs on and removed the cats. Now I have a "BorlaMouth" using an XR1 and couldn't be happier... Other good inexpensive mods are:
Pulley
Headers
Thermostat
Tune
Weight reduction

Re: LS1 Mods
i'm not sure i'd put "pulley" under the category of inexpensive or "good"
5hp for $225 is pretty pricey.
i got it because i was looking to get as much out of my car with boltons (that i could do in my driveway) as possible. i have no qualms about the pulley, but i definatly couldn't tell much of a difference.

Re: LS1 Mods
I got mine used with new belts for $200, put it on in 3hrs (took my time) and the engine revved quicker and felt more responsive to throttle input. I don't have dyno #s to back it up, but I'd be willing to bet it was worth 5 or 6rwhp.
Re: LS1 Mods
I just got my '98 formula a couple weeks ago and baselined it before I did a couple mods. Best pass before mods was a 13.74 @ 103.50 w/ a 2.14 60 ft time. This car already had a terrible hackjob flowmaster system installed on it, so I knew it would pick up. I bought a lid and an SLP LM w/ bullet muffler, installed it and went to the track last night - 13.55@ 106.49 w/ a 2.24 60 ft time. If I had a set of sticky tires it'd probably run 13.2 , but I'd scatter the rearend in the process. So street tires it is until I can cough up the cash for a rear. Buy a catback and a lid. Best money you can spend for your first mods.
