Post Ls1 and the LT1- is there a big difference?

Give me the horsepower difference between a 1996/1997 model and a 1998(ls1) model. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Well 285 for the 97, 96, and 310 for the LS1 98 - 2000 and 310 for the 2001-2002. However the LS1 is underrated, says 310, but most people are putting that to the rear wheels, so you figure it out. LT1 97, 96 has more torque at low end while the LS1 is a high rpm motor. Personaly I love the sound of an LT1 but i love the power from my LS1.

285hp for 96/97 LT1
340hp for 1998 LS1

(don't believe that 305 hp rating for LS1)

GM High Tech Peformance did a dyno camparison awhile back. A 97 LT1 dynoed around 225 rwhp, while the 98 LS1 dynoed about 285 rwhp. That's a pretty substantial hp difference from the factory.

heres what i have personally seen:
LT1 230-260 rwhp dependent on year/tranny
LS1 270-310 rwhp dependent on year/tranny
so between the two there is a lot of variability. both great motors IMO.

They are very different motors. Nothing sounds better to my ears than an LT1 with headers, decent exhaust and a loping cam. My old '97 Z28 M6 dyno'd 278/303 with an FIPK, FlowMaster American Thunder catback and ported MAF. The dyno guy thought that was very strong for an LT1. My '98 Z28 M6 dyno'd 316/330 with a ported MAF, Whisper lid and SLP 2OTL catback. My '01 T/A M6 put 311/334 to the rollers bone stock at 1800 miles. Below 2K rpm, the LT1 has more torque. After that, the LS1 advantage increases as the rev's do, and that extra 500 useable rpm up top is the icing. If heavy mods are in your future, all bets are off and on the extreme end of mods the LT1 is the winner. There are a lot of good deals on nice LT1 cars out there, as well as LS1. You might decide to shop for them all and pick the best car to satisfy your need for speed, cost, driveability and reliability. I would like to pick up a cheap '94-'97 Z28/Formula hardtop with a 6 speed to use as a track (road course) car.

Lt1 may have more parts out there but ...The ls1 responds very well to mods. I think it all depends on how you have the car setup..If you setup any engine right It could beat a car with more power or torque...But if they are both equal your ls1 will do what the lt1 does that much better. If it didn't GM wouldn't have changed the engine out.

Mods? I think it would be easyer for me just to list the things that aren't changed in the car.

Assembled here in the USA. No thinking required.

I think there are just as many mods out now for the LS1 than the LT1. In either case, the LS1 is far and away a stronger motor. There are heads/cam LS1's running in the 10's now. I love the LT1's, but the LS1 is just a better motor.
