LS1 and LS6 intakes

That other thread reminded me that I wanted to ask this.

I know that 2001 and 2002 LS1 F-bodies got the LS6 intake manifold.

Did 2001+ non-Z06 C5's also get the LS6 manifold, or did they keep the older, lower-performing LS1 manifold?

Re: LS1 and LS6 intakes

I would think so. THe LS1 intake was strictly on LS1's .... In 01 and 02 they started upgrading components. They started gettign the LS6 block also.

I know about the block, but that doesn't affect performance at all. It just has a few extra windows to improve cooling.

Just to be perfectly clear, I want to know which intake manifold I would find on an '01-04 LS1 Vette. Obviously the Z06's would have had the LS6 intake, but wouldn't that have negated some of the difference between the base C5 and the Z06?

Re: LS1 and LS6 intakes

I'm pretty sure he meant all 01+ switched to LS6. They had to make up for lost HP with smaller cams and increased emissions crap, so the new standard was LS6 intake. Can anyone check out my other thread and tell me if I'm bidding on an LS6 intake LOL

"The LS6 has a redesigned engine block includes quarter size slots cast into the webs underneath the travel area of the piston which reduces the amount of air the pistons pump resulting in higher rpm output"

Otherwise improves bay to bay breathing. Which I suppose could have a cooling effect...

Re: LS1 and LS6 intakes

1. ALL LS1's from 01 up have the LS6 intake.
Basically GM started using truck and Z06 components on the LS1 to reduce the need to produce and stock LS1 specific parts.

2. NOT all LS1's from 01 up use the LS6 block. 15% of 01s and 25% of 02's got the LS6 Block.

"wouldn't that have negated some of the difference between the base C5 and the Z06?"

not really...7-10 hp increase due to the intake manifold is negligable when you consider the true LS6 had a bigger cam and better flowing heads.

Re: LS1 and LS6 intakes

Thats only a 40-50 whp difference.

Plus the Z06 is more than just engine mods.

You'll find an LS6 intake manifold on all 2001+ LS1s.

The differences between the Z06 and Base C5 is coupe vs. targa top hatch, 200 lbs less weight, some suspension components (although negligible when you're talking about a Z51 suspended coupe), and heads/cam/some blocks, which doesn't really matter much unless you're leaving the car bone-stock.

Re: LS1 and LS6 intakes

Check my sticky on the top of the LSX tech page...I posted a BUTLOAD of new stuff in there. there's a link in the sticky to some pics ofthe LS1/6 intakes.

--How to tell the differance--

Thanks, Greed4Speed for suppliing the information.

On the LS1 the bottom of the intake is not flat., but they have the X shaped bracing between the ports.
On the LS6 manifold, it has a flatter bottom and 1 verticle w 2 horizontal ribs in the area between the ports.

Note the difference in the area between the ports and the LS1 having the bump in the middle.

The LS6's also do not have EGR provisions, unless the are fabricted. Stock, they donot.

Re: LS1 and LS6 intakes

but what is it that makes the performance of the ls6 intake better than that of the ls1?

It flows more air.

What do you really want to know?
