LS1 H/C Numbers
LS1 H/C Numbers
What's the highest HP/TQ number that a H/C LS1 can turn?
I know that LT1 with LE3 can turn 425-430RWHP.
I would like to see if the LT1 and LS1 come equal when modded with Head/Cam. I know stock to stock, the LS1 wins the HP/TQ numbers.
Don't get me wrong, this is not one of "who is better LT1/LS1".
I have a 383 LT1 with CNC ported heads, big cam, injectors and 58 Holley TB. Also, I have 2002 stock LS1 engine complete with PCM and harness and Comp Cams 224/230 on 114 LSA camshaft with RPM kit.
I am debating if I should sell the LT1 and swap the LS1 with camshaft and headers. Will the LS1 turn higher HP/TQ numbers, with that cam, than the 383 LT1. How about with a H/C package from TR or TSP.
It's a Hybrid Jeep for sand drags.

Basically, the LS1 puts down cam-only numbers similar to a heads/cam LT1.

Re: LS1 H/C Numbers
one of the main differences in the 2 engines are the cylinder heads, the LS1 heads simply move more air (in most cases) and make more power.
as far as h/c setup in the LS1 it is fairly easy to hit 450ish rwhp; my current street/strip car is making 453rwhp and 417rwtq, with Patriot Stg. 2 heads, one of our custom cams, Dynatech 1 7/8 race headers, LS6 intake. also this is through a 12 bolt with 4.33 gears.
one thing to remember is that the stock bottom end should not be spooled above 6500rpms, many people do it, but it is living on the edge if you do. the reciprical/geometric stress above 6500rpms is hard on the stock rod bolts.
again I know many people do it, I do it, but if the car is a daily driver or you can't afford to replace the engine I don't recommend going above the 6500rpms.

Re: LS1 H/C Numbers
i agree with mike
cam only LS1s put out about the same performance as most decent h/c LT1s
450rwhp is pretty easy for a h/c LS1...with good driveability too.
i'm hoping to get some Dart 205s on my car this summer...i'm really hoping for 450rwhp but i'm not sure i'll make it. i want the added low/mid range power of the 205s...so i'm gonna sacrifice a little top end.

Re: LS1 H/C Numbers
I make 436rwhp/420rwtq with "old" 5.7 heads, a nitrous cam, and I don't even have all the bolt-ons. My Z28 is getting a new clutch, bigger injectors and tune this week, so we'll see what happens... It's tough to beat a good H/C setup on an LS1 and the prices are starting to get almost reasonable.
Re: LS1 H/C Numbers
those are nice respectable numbers. what are the specs on the cam?
at those levels i'd be willing to bet your maxing out your injectors on the duty cycle. so you may see a good gain from bigger ones.
keep us posted.

Re: LS1 H/C Numbers
Depends on the heads and cam. Stock 28lb LS1 injectors are good up to around 450 horsepower at the flywheel. Beyond that and they'll be the limiting factor in your setup. Ideally, you'll only get your injectors up to 80 or 90% duty cycle, so it'd be best to upgrade your stockers well before you ever reach 450 bhp.
The only things bigger injectors can hurt are your pocketbook and your fuel economy.
Here's some good reading. There's a nice link in there too.
