LS1 engine numbers location

LS1 engine numbers location

I have a 2001 SS convertible. I am trying to locte the engine identification numbers on block. There are NO numbers on the pad on passenger side front of motor in front of the head where I would expect them to be. Did GM not place them there? They could be on driver side rear above the bell housing, but it is too tight to see. The motor has never been out of the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
