It is true a good synthetic like Mobil 1, German Syntec, Redline, etc can go 7500ish miles and still give good wear analysis results. However, I still wouldn't go nearly this far on an old school hot rod. Opening the secondaries on these makes these run a little richer than alot of EFI cars and getting a little gas and contaminants into the oil from this still warrants the 3k or less change interval IMO. My friend's 79Z28 with a fresh warmed over 355 is proof of this. He uses Mobil 1 0W40 with K@N filters and after about 2k miles, the oil is pretty dirty. He also gets on it almost on a regular basis.

I also use a fram oil filter with the rubber grip thing so I can get it off with my hands most of the time.

You do know that Fram oil filters have been positively proven to be the worst oil filters on the market don't you?
