low oil light

I have about 42,000 mi on my '99 Z/28.I changed the oil about 800 mi ago, then last week my low oil light started acting up.Sometimes it will stay on at start up but only once in a while.I've checked the oil level 5 different times & it's always been right at "full'. Does anyone have any ideas about this ? Has this ever happened to any of you ? I figure it's just a computer or sensor glitch but it would be nice to know for sure. Thanks for any help you can give.

Did you reset the Oil Life Monitor after you changed the oil?

If your oil level is fine, maybe it most likely is just a dirty or malfunctioning sensor. Is the oil pressure fine?

Probably has no connection to the Low Oil light, though...

Re: low oil light

Your a brave man going 10k on an oil change. I always change mine at 3k or less with synthetic. For such a small cost why not??

Re: low oil light

To answer SFB767,yes,I did reset the oil life monitor.I,ve owned the car now for about 4 yrs & done my own gen. maint.(oil changes, tune ups, etc) but this is the 1st time it's ever done anything like this before. The couple of times the low oil light came on I was down exactly 1 qt.As of now it hasn't come on in about 3 days or so so maybe there was just a dirty sensor like 95GRNZ said & it cleared itself out,at least I hope so anyway. Thanks for the replies & hopefully the problem is gone & not something more serious.

3k or less?!? !Why? most synthetics have been proven to not even start doing their job until over 4500 miles!

I have more faith in technology than most I guess.

Patman suggests 7500 being the number to change oil at.

I may try that in the future.. but for now, it still hasnt told me to change the oil yet..

Man, 10,000 miles, does it look like sludge? I wonder if your filter is filtering,or by-passin, I just changed oil in my wifes truck today, 3179 miles, Mobil one and it was black, always is, always gets changed every 3000 , my older cars go 2000, I realize thats overkill, I'm just old school, but I wouldn't go over 5000, Man if you go 10,000 I would at least change the filter at about 5 and enough oil to bring it back to full. Re: low oil light

in theory, with just changing filters you could go indefinately.. There is a system that you can install that has two mega filters.. Its like doing an oil change every 5 min. Pretty interesting setup.. All you have to do is change the two filters and top off..

you really need to take care of your car psycho, I change mine with Mobil 1 every 3-4K and it is black, yours must be sludge by now.

I change my oil every 3000ish miles and it always comes out looking pretty close to what it looked like when it went in... You drive yours every day?
